East China Normal University (ECNU) was founded in October 1951 on the site of Great China University. Over fifty years of development have shaped ECNU into one of the key institutions of higher learning under the direct oversight of the Ministry of Education, becoming influential both at home and abroad. The university attaches great importance to the integration of liberal arts university norms of academic excellence with an equal emphasis on teaching and scientific research. Today, ECNU has successfully developed into a school not only strong in the educational sciences, but also strong in the fields of social science, humanities, natural sciences, science and technology and management. Since its founding, the university has educated over 100,000 students who have been well received by their employers. The university has also been actively involved in providing service for elementary and secondary education, in both economic construction and social works towards the city of Shanghai and other parts of China. ECNU is linked with the world, partnered with nearly 100 foreign institutions for academic exchange. Perhaps the most famous department at ECNU is that which trains Chinese-as-a-second-language teachers; NYU in Shanghai hires most of its Chinese Language staff from this school.
