Student Housing at NYU in London -
Homestay

Students studying abroad at NYU in London have the option of choosing to live in a homestay in London. Living with a British host or family for a semester will give students a unique opportunity to experience British life and culture firsthand. The homestay option will suit open-minded students who have a genuine interest in learning about British culture and are prepared to adapt their lifestyle to live with others from a different culture.

Hosts treat students as a member of the family and as such students are permitted to use all public areas of the family home, although use of the kitchen will vary according to the chosen catering option. Single and twin rooms are available and each occupant receives a single bed, a reading light, a wardrobe, a chest of drawers or shelves, and a desk or writing table with chair. Bathrooms are shared with other members of the household. Heating, lighting, hot water, and laundry facilities (a minimum of 2 washes per week) are included in the housing costs. Internet facilities vary per homestay and access will usually be shared with other members of the household. Students should therefore expect to restrict their online activities to academic and low bandwidth use.

Homestays are generally located in Zones 2 or 3 of London and so students should be prepared to commute into central London (Zone 1) to take classes, access academic and administrative support and join up with co-curricular excursions, often at peak travelling periods of the day. Homestay students will be provided with a travelcard (included in the housing cost) which gives unlimited travel on London’s Underground and bus network for the duration of the semester. The travelcard will cover Zone 1 out to and including the zone in which the student’s homestay is located. The average commute to classes should take around 30 to 60 minutes from door to door, depending of course upon which area in London each homestay is located in.
