The EEA is the European Union countries plus Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.
This section is for you if you will be entering the UK with a general ‘Student’ visa.
A Student visa is permission you apply for before coming to the UK and which allows you to work and stay longer than 6 months.
If you are not sure what sort of visa you should apply for please speak to a member of staff in the Global Programs Study Abroad office.
If you will apply for a visa on arrival in the UK (a ‘Student Visitor’ visa) this section does not apply to you.
The ‘Student’ visa
If you are a non-EEA national and you wish to be allowed to work in the UK (whether paid or not including community service, internships and work study positions) you must enter the UK with a general Student visa.
Sponsorship

What is a Sponsor and what do they do?
As a Sponsor we have a legal obligation to monitor your attendance on behalf of the United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA), the government department responsible for immigration, and ensure you comply with the immigration conditions imposed as part of your visa.
These obligations include:
• Ensuring that you arrive and enrol on your course
• Keeping a copy of your passport/visa (and/or identity card if you have one)
• Providing UKBA with your contact details
• Updating your contact details
• Reporting any unauthorised absences
• Reporting to UKBA if you discontinue your studies
We must notify the relevant British government authority if:
• You fail to enrol at NYU in London within 10 working days
• You miss 10 ‘contact points’ (this includes classes, tutorials and assignment submission deadlines)
• You stop attending NYU in London
• We believe you are breaking your visa conditions (i.e. working more than 20 hours per week during the semester)
You must:
• Provide us with a copy of your passport, including photo and visa, and a copy of your biometric ID card if you have one on arrival at NYU in London
• Comply with the terms of your visa by working no more than 20 hours per week during the semester and informing us of any change in your circumstances
• Not remain in the UK beyond the expiry date of your visa
PLEASE NOTE: All NYU in London students cease being students of NYU in London either on the last day of the semester or on the date of the expiry of their entry visa to the UK, if this is earlier.
