NYUL students are required to have international medical insurance cover. Although this insurance is essential for major health issues, especially ones involving hospital stay, our experience has been that students are reluctant to use this for rather more minor illnesses of various sorts. We have therefore signed all our students up to a National Health Service doctors’ office only a few hundred feet from the academic centre. This NHS ‘surgery’ (as it is called) meets the primary physical and mental health needs of our students, including a sexual health clinic and counselling.
We also have on site a part time psychologist, available for some limited student counselling and who can advise students on how to meet longer term counselling needs, should they arise.
Students can easily connect to the Wellness Center in New York through our local telephone exchange system. The Wellness Center is an easily accessible and comprehensive set of caring services that promotes health and wellbeing while providing effective responses to students’ health and mental health needs, and which can also help NYUL students on a telephone support basis.
Very infrequently, students need secondary physical or mental health support. We work with International SOS (ISOS), an organisation that advises us on the appropriate hospitalisation in London, should this be necessary. Students are even covered by ISOS support when they travel outside the UK. ISOS can be used not only as a health resource while travelling but also in other types of emergencies, such as a lost or stolen passport.
