Faculty News

NYU in London has a faculty that would be the envy of any major university, let alone a study abroad site. They are research active, leaders in their disciplines, and recipients of many distinctions and awards. Below is a selection that gives you an indication of what NYU in London’s faculty is like.

Matt Wolf has been asked to be a judge  for The Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2009. Matt teaches NYU in London's Methods & Practice: Reporting the Arts course.

Konrad Hirschler has been appointed a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (RHS). Election to fellowship status is conferred on those who have made "an original contribution to historical scholarship in the form of significant published work." Konrad teaches NYU in London's What Is Islam? course.

Emma Sweeney has recently been awarded a Byrdcliffe Artist in Residence fellowship as well as being shortlisted for both the prestigious International Fish Prize and the Asham Award (Britain’s foremost short story prize for women writers). Emma teaches NYU in London's Creative Writing and Writing I courses and is also Director of Professional Tutoring.

Karen Karbiener has been named a Kluge Fellow at the Library of Congress for 2009-2010, which will enable the completion of her book, Walt Whitman and New York: The Urban Roots of Leaves of Grass. In addition she has also received a Fulbright for the same duration, which will enable her research on a book about her father's family, and their internment in post-WWII death camps in Yugoslavia. Karen teaches Cultural Foundations I & II as well as Writing and Topics in Modern Culture & Society at NYU in London.

Denis Judd's most recent book is his edited edition of the Diaries of Alison Uttley (2009). Professor Judd teaches NYU in London's History of Southern Africa and Modern Imperialsim: 19th and 20th Centuries courses.

Dr. Susan Strauss has recently become a Chartered Counselling Psychologist in the UK. She continues to maintain her long-time status as a Licensed Psychologist in Texas. Susan has also just been asked to join a British university group of Heads of University Counselling Services in London, in her capacity as Head of Wellness Services for NYU in London.

Emma Sweeney One of Emma's short stories, The Rebirth has been shortlisted for the Asham Award, the foremost short story prize for women writers. Emma is NYU in London's Director of Professional Tutoring and also teaches Creative Writing & Writing I.

Clive Bloom Professor Bloom has recently published Bestsellers: Popular Fiction since 1900 and the second edition of Gothic Literature. Clive Bloom teaches NYU in London's Gothic Literature and Issues in Contemporary British Politics & Culture courses, as well as a section of Cultural Foundations I.

Michael Hattaway Professor Hattaway has recently published an e-book William Shakespeare: King Richard II, (Tirril:  Humanities Ebooks, 2008) (http://www.humanities-ebooks.co.uk/Catalogue/Shakespeare_Richard_II.html), delivered a paper at the International Shakespeare Association World Congress, ‘Shakespeare and the Invention of Landscape:  The View from Dover Cliff’, and was the recipient of a research award  from the Auber Bequest, Royal Society of Edinburgh. Michael Hattaway teaches NYU in London's Shakespeare: Text and Performance, Shakespeare and the Elizabethan Stage, Major British Writers and Cultural Foundations courses.

Constantine Sandis A philosophical discussion on Black Swans, between Dr Sandis and Nassim Nicholas Taleb, was recently published in Philosophy Now magazine (Sep/Oct 2008). His edited volume New Essays on the Explanation of Action (which includes contributions from NYU in London's Director, David-Hillel Ruben, and Anthony Price, NYU in London's Ethics and Metaphysics professor) is out in November 2008, and the book launch for it will be held at NYU in London in February 2009. Constantine Sandis teaches NYU in London's course Central Problems in Philosophy.

Andrew Bremner Psychology: The Science of Mind and Behaviour, which Dr Bremner has authored, has recently been published. Andrew Bremner teaches Introduction to Psychology at NYU in London.

Dirk Nitzsche Dr Nitzsche's book, Investments has been recently published. Dirk Nitzsche teaches Foundations of Financial Markets at NYU in London.

Gavin Stamp Gavin Stamp recently published The Memorial to the Missing of the Somme and Britain's Lost Cities. Gavin Stamp teaches Architecture in London at NYU in London.

Dorota Bourne Dr. Bourne has organized a seminar entitled 'Stories of Leadership and Globalization' which will take place at Queen Mary College, University of London, in June 2007. Dorota Bourne teaches the Management and Organizational Analysis course at NYU in London.

Loukas Mistelis Professor Mistelis has recently completed an International Arbitration survey in association with Pricewaterhouse Coopers entitled 'International Arbitration: A Study into Corporate Attitudes and Practices', which has been received very well by both academia and practice. Loukas Mistelis teaches NYU in London's Legal Aspects of Business course.

Timothy Brittain-Catlin Mr. Brittain-Catlin's introduction to architectural history for beginners, How to Read a Building is due to be published in July 2007.Timothy Brittain-Catlin teaches NYU in London's courses Seeing London and Ideology and Urban Design: Builders of Britain.

Constantine Sandis In Spring 2007, Dr. Sandis appeared in a televised discussion with Sir David Frost and Nassim Nicholas Taleb for the Al Jazeera International Programme 'Frost Over the World' and has also been invited to give a lecture at a workshop on action theory to be held in June 2007 at the University of Jyvaskyla. His edited collections of critical essays on Mill, Hume, Ryle and Wittgenstein will be published by Macmillan in early 2008. Constantine Sandis teaches NYU in London's course Central Problems in Philosophy.

Vincent Mitchell In May 2007, Dr. Mitchell published an article entitled 'So you think you understand your revenues' in the Harvard Business Review. Vincent Mitchell teaches NYU in London's Introduction to Marketing course.

Ranka Primorac Dr. Primorac has published The Place of Tears: The Novel and Politics in Modern Zimbabwe. This original work is the only recent monographic treatment of the Zimbabwean novel and its political implications. Dr. Primorac has published extensively on Zimbabwean literature and brings to her work a deep contextual richness as well as theoretical sophistication. Ranka Primorac teaches Pan-Africanism at NYU in London.

Michael Hattaway In July Michael Hattaway gave an invited lecture, "The View from Dover Cliff: Shakespeare and the Invention of Landscape" at the World Shakespeare Congress in Brisbane. Professor Hattaway teaches Major British Writers at NYU in London.

Denis Judd Professor Judd has a regular bi-monthly series appearing in the BBC HISTORY MAGAZINE entitled 'Great British Historians'. Among his latest media interviews is one for Norway's biggest commercial TV station on 'The British Empire'. He is soon to take part in a discussion on BBC Radio 4's 'Making History' Programme on the '1807 Abolition of the Slave Trade', looking at the consequences of this reform. Professor Judd teaches the History of Southern Africa course at NYU in London.

Phillip Drummond The organizers of the Spanish Ministry of Culture's international conference marking the 70 th Anniversary Conference of the Spanish Civil War, held in Madrid at the end of November 2006, selected for presentation a paper by Phillip Drummond on American and British film representations of the war. In Spring 2007 he presented a paper on race and identity in new British film and TV at the annual conference of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies, held in Chicago. Dr. Drummond teaches British Cinema at NYU in London.

Tim Fenton Tim Fenton was in Istanbul in early November 2006 for NewsXchange - the main annual conference for broadcast news organisations. Tim was producing a session on User Generated Content. Tim Fenton teaches NYU in London’s Journalism and Society course.

David Larman On the 17th November 2006, Professor David Larman was elected Vice President of the London Mathematical Society. This is the U.K.’s National Academic Society for Mathematics. Earlier this year, he received the Austrian Cross of Honour for Arts and Sciences, presented by the President of Austria. David Larman teaches Vector Analysis at NYU in London.

Stephen Inwood Stephen Inwood’s latest book, City of Cities: The Birth of Modern London came out in paperback in October 2006. Dr. Inwood teaches NYU in London’s course, the History of London.
