NYU in London 2006-7 Teaching Award

Dr. Jane Beckett, our lecturer in Contemporary Art and History of Art, has won the NYU in London Annual Teaching Award for the academic year 2006-7.

Below are just a few of the students’ comments Jane has received:

“Best professor I’ve ever had.  She had the most incredible amount of knowledge.  Made everything fun and intriguing.”

“Gallery visits and museums are very helpful.  You actually see what you are learning about.  Jane Beckett is an exceptional professor/lecturer/guide.  She is never boring.”

“the instructor is truly unique in her real desire to hear what her students have to say.”

“Dr Jane Beckett is the best professor I have ever had.  She challenges us intellectually while teaching us extensively about London and British culture”

Jane has been extremely good at integrating London and its resources into her classroom work.  She takes all her classes regularly to galleries but these are often also outside of London – in the past she has taken her class to the Henry Moore Foundation, Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge, Charleston House and she also leads a weekend trip to Tate St Ives in Cornwall.

As well as teaching contemporary British art at NYU in London, Jane also has an active professional career.  She teaches on other programmes at London University and at the University of East Anglia where she was Senior Lecturer in Art History. She is completing a book on the cultural history of Amsterdam, has published extensively on European and British modern and contemporary art, photography and film, most recently Henry Moore (2003) and in Difference and Excess (2004), written the catalogue on Art and Film (2005) for the British Film Institute  and curated exhibitions in the UK and the USA.

Jane challenges her students to think critically about the world around them through the medium of art, encouraging them to be intellectually rigorous, while respecting and listening to their opinions. I am very pleased to recommend her to you for this award.

Well done Jane!
