The School of Oriental and African Studies

NYUL works closely with the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, to provide a specialised programme in Africana Studies, in the fall semester only. SOAS offers five 'traditional' African studies courses to NYUL students, from which any two can be taken: African Language Literatures, Perspectives on African Experience, Language in Africa, Contemporary African Literature, and Culture in Africa. Information about SOAS can be found at: www.soas.ac.uk.

NYUL has three courses which contribute to the joint programme, two of which are focused on the Black Diaspora: Introduction to Black Urban Studies, Introduction to Pan-Africanism, and State and Society in Africa, with special reference to Ghana. Both SOAS and NYUL students can take these courses. State and Society is especially suitable for students who may wish to go to Ghana for study abroad in the spring semester, after spending the fall semester in London.

Other related NYU courses available at NYUL to students with interests in this area include World Art in Collections, Britain and Slavery, and Writing Postcolonial London.
