Using the cultural life of London as its focus, this course aims to enable students to report on the diversity of cultural and artistic activity in the British capital across the spectrum, starting with the theatre as befits the instructor, who is a noted drama critic and arts journalist for The International Herald Tribune (www.nytimes.com/theater), among many other publications. Various forms and techniques will be explored through lecture, discussion and assignments, including: news reports, interviews, reviews (film, dance, theatre, classical music and opera and pop and rock), feature stories, essays, and commentaries. During the course, students will learn not only about London’s cultural landscape but will be encouraged to consider various journalistic and literary forms. Weekly visits to theatre and other live performances are a key component of this course, and this autumn's outings look likely to include the West End premiere of The Shawshank Redemption; the revival of Sir Tom Stoppard's Arcadia; an exciting triple bill from the Royal Ballet; the London Philharmonia in concert; and the new English National Opera production of Turandot, directed by the maverick theatre-maker Rupert Goold.
This course is accompanied by a theatre visit, code V54.9202.004
This course carries an additional fee of £150 to cover the cost of theatre tickets. Students should also be prepared to pay up to £150 for extra tickets while in London as part of the Methods & Practice course.
