Just got accepted to NYU? Congratulations! If you are already in the U.S. as an F-1 or J-1 student at another institution, you must complete a transfer of your immigration sponsorship to transfer to or begin a new full-time program of study at NYU. Follow these steps to learn how to transfer your immigration sponsorship to NYU.
To be eligible for NYU sponsorship of F-1 or J-1 student status, you need to be accepted to a full-time academic program at NYU and have an official admission notice from NYU along with an NYU University ID number. If you are not yet admitted to NYU and have questions about how to apply, please visit NYU Admissions.
You must have your current international student advisor complete an F-1 Transfer Form. Once the form is completed by both you and your current international student advisor you will want to include this completed form in your I-20 Application (see step 5).
The I-20/DS-2019 Application is interactive and fillable online.
In the subject line, type “I-20 Application” or “DS-2019 Application” (whichever you are applying for) and include your full name and NYU University ID number.
Email files must not exceed 10MB and should not be scanned over 300 dpi.
Keep a photocopy of your I-20/DS-2019 Application and all attached documents for your records. Keep a set of original financial documents to bring to your visa interview.
If you are in the U.S. in F-1 or J-1 status, include a copy of your I-94 information and your current I-20 or DS-2019.
Once we receive your application we will start working on your I-20 or DS-2019. We’ll email you if your application is missing anything so make sure to check your NYU email while you’re waiting for your document.
Approximately 2 weeks after submitting a complete application, you will receive your I-20 or DS-2019. Be sure to read all of the material we send you, as we will be sending you other important information you need to know!
You can also check the status of your application.
You can now begin your studies with your I-20 or DS-2019. If you plan to travel outside of the U.S. before you begin your program at NYU you can re-enter the U.S. with your new transfer I-20 from NYU
Read this Arrival Checklist to find out what you will need to do to successfully begin your program at NYU as an international student.
