Registration and Orientation

Registration

In order for NYU to validate your arrival in the SEVIS database, you must register with the Office of Global Services immediately upon your arrival. J-1 federal regulations require every exchange visitor to register upon arriving in the U.S., even if you have been in the U.S. in J-1 status before. Program sponsors must report the exchange visitor's arrival in SEVIS within 30 days of the begin date on the DS-2019 form. This cannot be done if the Office of Global Services is not informed of your arrival.

When registering at the Office of Global Services, bring the following original documents (and those of any dependents) with you

Orientation

Within 2 weeks of arriving, you must attend an orientation session at the Office of Global Services. Orientations are held exclusively for J-1 faculty, researchers, and scholars every Wednesday from 10:15am-11:00am. Sign up for an orientation by:

  • Visiting the Office of Global Services (You may reserve a seat when you come in to register.)
  • Call International Scholar Services at (212) 998-4242
  • Sending an email to the attention of Scholar Services at intl.students.scholars@nyu.edu

Orientation sessions include information on immigration, health insurance, travel outside the U.S., university and community services, and other matters of interest to new exchange visitors.

NOTE: If you plan to register and attend orientation the same morning, arrive at least ten minutes before the session begins (at 10:05 am) to complete your registration.
