Housing

All NYU Florence students are required to live in NYU-arranged housing. Whether you live on NYU’s breathtaking estate, in an Off-Campus Residence, in a Homestay, or in Special Interest Housing , our housing options will help make your stay in Florence truly memorable. Florence is a city where you can easily walk or use public transportation to get anywhere. Most upper-class students live off campus in Off-Campus Residences and Homestays located in and around the city center, although a small number may live on campus. The freshman class is required to live on the estate. Regardless of where students live, they are supported by Residence Life Staff (Residence Hall Managers and Peer Advisors).

Natalia and Colletta are the two campus villas dedicated to student housing.  On campus housing is traditional dormitory-style living with standard bedrooms, en-suite or hallway bathrooms, and lounge facilities.  The housing fees for this option include a meal plan (breakfast and dinner daily), Internet, and a cleaning/linens service.  Villa Natalia has a computer lab and exercise room to which all students have access.

Off-Campus Residences are leased by the University and considered part of the NYU Florence housing program. Each suite has bedrooms, shared bathrooms, and its own kitchen where students can cook their meals. Off-Campus Residences are high-occupancy living arrangements with amenities such as Internet and a cleaning/linens service.

Homestays are also part of the housing program and come with or without a meal option. Living with a family is a great opportunity to learn Italian quickly and get to know Italian life first hand. Students who live in Homestays without a meal option have access to the family's kitchen.

There are several Special Interest Housing options at NYU Florence.  Students who speak Italian proficiently and wish to engage in the local culture through specially organized events and activities may opt to live in "Casa Fiorentina".  Civic-minded students may be interested in "Vivere il Volontariato", community service housing.  Students who wish to live in an alcohol and substance-free environment may request SAFE housing.

Special Interest Housing

Within some of these housing types, Special Interest Housing may be offered. A description of the NYU Florence Special Interest Housing options is available below.

This housing option is designed for Italian language-proficient students who are interested in Italian culture and language learning opportunities outside the classroom. Students who select this option are housed in one of the Off-Campus Residences with other students interested in the option. Special features of this housing include special NYU-subsidized cultural events and trips, interaction with members of the Florentine community, and the presence of an Italian-speaking residence life staff member. Residents of Casa Fiorentina are expected to speak Italian at home, participate in at least 50% of the scheduled Casa Fiorentina events, be active members of the Scambio Dinners and DSU Project, and promote cultural exchange on campus and in the city. The main prerequisite for this housing option is that candidates must be enrolled in or speak Italian at a conversational or higher level.

This housing option is designed for students who are interested in performing community service during their stay in Florence. Students who apply for this housing option should have a special interest in learning about local service opportunities, creating a positive connection between NYU and the local community, and promoting civic responsibility at NYU Florence. Students who select this option are housed in one of the Off-Campus Residences with other students interested in this option. There are no prerequisites for this housing option, but preference is given to students enrolled in the Service Learning class.

"SAFE" Housing is a suitable option for students who do not smoke or use or possess alcohol and/or drugs. Students who choose this option are placed in an Off-Campus Residence or an On-Campus room based on preference, demand, and availability. In selecting this option, students agree to keep their environment free of all types of smoke and/or tobacco products, alcohol, and illegal drugs at all times. Staff in Florence will endeavor to ensure that this community remains free of alcohol and other drugs regardless of individual choices made by fellow residents.

Housing Process and Availability

NYU Florence staff will try to accommodate student preferences; however, due to space limitations, students may be placed in any of the housing possibilities regardless of preferences. Upper-class students should be aware that on-campus options may be very limited, and priority is given to students who have a documented need to live on campus. Please be aware that in an effort to best accommodate the largest number of students, NYU Florence will only consider roommate requests for the same bedroom (i.e. double, triple), not based upon a larger groupings (i.e. a suite, an entire floor or residence, residences located in the same vicinity, etc.). While students may request a living situation offered in a prior term, be aware that the off-campus properties sometimes change from term to term, and factors besides a request to live in a specific location have to be considered in meeting student needs. NYU cannot release roommate information prior to arrival due to privacy laws.
