Art & Art History in Berlin

Berlin is home to the most innovative contemporary art scene in Europe, and includes an ever expanding expatriate art community. Art students here will work in expansive newly constructed studio spaces for digital art, drawing and painting. Berlin artists such as Delia Gonzales, John Keckner and Andy Graydon engage the students in the local art scene through gallery openings and visits to artists' studios. Classes are often experimental and interdisciplinary in nature featuring performances, installations, and visits from local art stars. In addition to studio courses, students can enroll in art history courses which use the city as a classroom exploring Berlin's many museums and rich architectural history.

Sociology

The Department of Sociology offers courses that draw on German history through the analysis of major social theorists and seek to explain the factors that have influenced the city’s present-day social constructs.  The fall of the Berlin Wall paved the way for German unification and resulted in many societal economic and cultural conflicts.  At NYU Berlin, students can take a number of sociology courses in which topics such as Germany's political history, the politics of the European Union, Europe’s relationship with the U.S., as well as sociological theory and the teachings of major German-speaking philosophers are examined in depth.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

Modern-day Germany and its capital Berlin are a center for progressive environmental policies. Courses at NYU Berlin investigate the European Union's environmental policies and the connection between environment and society.

Cross-site degree programs

Many NYU schools and departments offer special global track degree programs. These programs are designed to give students unique global experience in their field of study and often involve studying abroad at multiple locations. Students in the programs listed below spend one or more semesters in Shanghai.

Global Visual Art Minor

The Department of Art & Art Professions offers studio and critical studies art courses at several NYU global sites: Berlin, Ghana, Shanghai, and Florence. Combining course work from NYU Washington Square and the global sites will enable students to create a distinctive minor in Global Visual Art. Classes abroad are taught in English by artists and faculty who will introduce students to local art scenes and help them to understand the differences in global cultures that are influencing contemporary art. These global sites have enhanced art facilities for students working in media such as photography, video, drawing, and painting. Students may combine courses from multiple NYU global sites.

Students in the Global Visual Art Minor will take four or more courses (minimum 16 points) of required and elective art offerings, combined from both New York and abroad. Most of the courses are offered through Steinhardt and some are offered through the College of Arts & Science.
