Trudy Steinfeld, Assistant Vice President and Executive Director of NYU's Wasserman Center for Career Development moderated a panel discussion on how to be successful in today's challenging job market. A career in media, especially in Washington, DC, requires a diverse range of skills, experience and know-how. Trudy led a panel of recruiters from NPR, APCO Worldwide and Magnet Media Originals who offered networking tips, shared organizational insights and answered audience questions.

Trudy Steinfeld

Trudy has spent twenty-eight years in the field of teaching, training, and career development. She has been on several NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) committees and taskforces, as well as chaired several national conferences including the June 2006 New York City NACE Conference. In addition to these, Trudy has been a presenter at numerous national meetings and conferences and has been recipients of both NASPA and NACE Excellence awards. She has served as consultant to universities, (including Sciences Po in Paris), and corporate recruiting organizations.

Trudy has been interviewed extensively and appeared as a national expert with: New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Fortune, Daily News, Newsday, New York Post, Crain’s, NBC, CBS, ABC, MTV, CNN, CNBC, MSNBC.


Elizabeth (Guerra) Gunzel

Beth Guerra is the director of talent acquisition at APCO Worldwide, a global communication, stakeholder engagement and business strategy firm headquartered in Washington, DC. Beth has over twelve years of human resources and recruiting experience primarily within global professional services firms and the staffing industry. At APCO, she serves as a business partner to leadership and is responsible for workforce planning, developing and leading recruitment strategy and diversity initiatives.

Prior to joining APCO, Ms. Guerra served as director, career management at the Advisory Board Company, where she led human resources and recruitment efforts for their performance technologies practice. Previously in her career, Ms. Guerra headed up corporate recruiting efforts for KPMG’s mid-Atlantic region.

Ms. Guerra earned a Bachelor of Science from Louisiana State University and holds a PHR (Professional in Human Resources) certification. She has an extensive background in recruiting for a wide variety and level of positions across several industries, including communication, consulting, marketing, public relations, health care and technology.

Paul Kontonis is 20 years digital media veteran with an industry leading expertise in original digital video programming and originals content businesses. Paul recently launched the highly acclaimed Magnet Media Originals, a next generation web originals studio developing and producing premium digital series, and acted as the Chairman of the International Academy of Web Television from 2011-2013. Paul’s industry leading voice includes role as Advisor of Outrigger Media and OpenSlate, the leading platform and content quality score for connecting marketers with native digital video for advertising, Co-Founder of BigScreen LittleScreen and Social Media Week New York Advisor. As the former Vice President, Group Director, Brand Content for The Third Act, at Digitas, Paul helped establish the Digital Content NewFronts as the premier marketplace for connecting brands with original digital content opportunities and has executive produced dozens of web series including successful branded entertainment for Global 100 brands. Paul authors numerous articles about online video, and is a speaker at several industry conferences and seminars annually. Paul is an alumni of NYU's College of Arts and Sciences.


Lars Schmidt

Lars Schmidt is the Senior Director of Talent Acquisition & Innovation at NPR where he is responsible for providing leadership and advocacy for talent acquisition strategies that align with NPR’s strategic mission and core values. Prior to NPR, Lars held various HR and recruiting leadership roles with companies including Ticketmaster, Magento, Pencom Systems and several startups in Los Angeles.

Lars is a fierce advocate for progressive HR with a strong track record in leveraging innovative talent and recruiting strategies. He was named a “Top 100 Influencer” by HR Examiner and "Top 100 Most Social HR Leaders on Twitter" by The Huffington Post.
