As part of the Global Leaders conversation series, Ambassador of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the United States of America, Dr. Alia Hatoug-Bouran delivered remarks at NYU Washington, DC on December 3, 2013. The series features Alon Ben-Meir, professor of international relations, journalist, and author, who hosts leaders from around the world in conversations that probe critical global issues and explore the policies designed to address them. The Global Leaders series is coordinated by NYU-SCPS Center for Global Affairs.

While at NYU Washington, DC, Dr. Hatoug-Bouran addressed Jordanian efforts to assist Syrian refugees, Jordanian economic development, and the on-going Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.

Dr. Alia Hatoug-Bouran became Ambassador of Jordan to the United States on September 16, 2010. Before her current post, she served as Jordan’s Ambassador to the UK. She has also served as Ambassador to Belgium and the European Commission, Norway, and Luxembourg.

In addition to her diplomatic service, she also held several government posts including Jordan’s Minister for Tourism and Antiquities and Minister of Environment, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Tourism, Coordinator of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, and Chairperson of the Investment Committee of the Economic Aqaba.

Ambassador Bouran was also an associate professor of Environmental Science at the University of Jordan, as well as environmental affairs advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and president of the board of directors for the Tourism Promotion Authority.

She studied at Moscow University and holds a PhD in Environmental Science and Strategic Planning from the Russian Academy branch Nobosi Perske. She speaks Arabic, English and Russian.
