Scholarships & Financial Aid

NYU Students

If you are a NYU upperclassmen spending a semester or year abroad at an NYU Global Academic Center, here are a few things you should know:

Studying abroad does not necessarily cost more than studying in New York. The cost of housing, meals, and daily living abroad is comparable and in some cases less expensive than New York City.
The cost of tuition and registration fees remains the same, and your NYU financial aid package applies while you study at an NYU Global Academic Center.
Students who receive financial aid may apply for additional financial aid for their semester abroad.
Need-based and merit-based study abroad scholarships and grants are available through NYU Global Programs and many external organizations.

Additional Financial Aid

If you are an NYU upperclassman currently receiving financial aid (must have valid FAFSA on file) you may apply for additional financial aid for your semester or year abroad at an NYU Global Academic Center. Simply complete the online Financial Aid for Study Away application form (scroll down to access form).

Once you have submitted the additional financial aid form, the NYU Office of Financial Aid will review it and notify you of your new award package beginning in June (for fall) and in November (for spring). You will view your financial aid package, including any adjustments for upcoming semesters, via Albert.

Internal Scholarships

NYU Global Programs has made several need-based and merit-based scholarships available to NYU upperclassmen that spend a semester or year abroad at an NYU Global Academic Center.

Eligibility Requirements

» Students must have applied or been admitted to an NYU Global Academic Center for fall, spring, or the full academic year through the Office of Global Programs.

» Students attending summer, winter, or school-sponsored programs such as Liberal Studies Freshmen Year Abroad or Tisch Special Programs, or exchange programs such as Stern IBEX or NYU International Exchange, are not eligible to apply.

» Students must be a currently enrolled full-time at and in good academic and disciplinary standing.

» Students must be eligible for aid from NYU and from federal and state government sources; students must be classified either as U.S. citizens or as eligible non-citizens.

Award Details

» All award recipients are required to participate in a project promoting study away through NYU Global Programs. Unless specified, award winners contribute to the THISISNYU project as Global Storytellers.

» All funding is posted as tuition credit to the recipient’s NYU student account.

Deadlines

» November 8 for the spring 2014 semester

TIP: If applying to multiple awards, do NOT use the same essay! Though questions may be similar, awards are unique and geared toward different applicants. Make sure you address in detail how you are a good fit for that specific scholarship.

Commuter Student Scholarship for Study Away ($1000)

Each semester five commuter students are awarded $1,000 scholarships to help defray the cost of studying away. In addition to the general eligibility requirements for all Internal Awards, valid applicants must be a commuter student as defined as never having lived on campus.

Essay Question: Commuter students often have a different undergraduate experience than students who live on campus. How will your experiences as a commuter student impact and prepare you for your study away program? How will you promote study away to the commuter community during the program and upon returning to campus? How do you think the Global Programs Office can promote study away to commuter students differently?

Transfer Student Scholarship for Study Away ($1000)

Each semester a select group of five transfer students are awarded $1000 scholarships to help defray the cost of studying abroad. Scholarships are awarded as tuition credit posted to the recipient’s NYU student account. . In addition to the general eligibility requirements for all Internal Awards, valid applicants must be a transfer student as defined as transferred from an external institute (not internal NYU transfers).

Essay Question: In New York City, cultural exchange is part of our daily lives. For example, you might hear five languages spoken during a 10-minute ride on the subway. Tell a story of a cross-cultural experience you have had in New York City, and describe how it relates to your interest in study abroad.

Sir Harold Acton International Fellowship ($2,000)

This award is in honor of the generous patron who donated his estate in Florence (known as La Pietra) to NYU. The Acton Award’s goal is to diversify the student population at NYU’s Global Academic Centers by offering $2000 scholarships to students who are a member of or an advocate for those traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic/Latino/Latina, Native-American, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) students. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated commitment to the inclusion of all students within the NYU community.

Essay Question: Please write specifically about your commitment to the inclusion of all students within the NYU community and how that experience exemplifies your ability to be a positive participant of your NYU study away program. Please be as detailed as possible in describing examples of that commitment: group membership, leadership roles, programming, etc.

Banco Santander Scholarship ($3,000)

Based in Spain, with offices around the world, Banco Santander is committed to assisting undergraduate students in fulfilling their interest in studying overseas. Thanks to a substantial gift from Banco Santander, NYU Global Programs is pleased to grant Banco Santander Scholarships in the amounts of $3,000 per academic semester for 133 undergraduate students annually who demonstrate high financial need and have applied to enroll in NYU Buenos Aires, NYU London or NYU Shanghai

Essay Question: How do you think studying away will impact your future career goals? Please be as specific as possible and explain why you have opted for this program at this point in your academic career.

Application Form

Joe Nkrumah Memorial Scholarship ($2,000)

Each semester two students studying abroad at NYU Accra will receive the $2,000 Nkrumah Scholarship. Joe Nkrumah was a professor at NYU Accra whose passion for the arts touched and inspired many. Applicants are selected based on a written proposal to conduct, upon returning to campus, a follow-up project that promotes Ghanaian Art and Culture. To be eligible you must have an active application on file for NYU Accra for the fall or spring semester.

Essay Question: Please provide a detailed proposal for a promotional project to inspire students to learn about the art and culture of Ghana. Applicants should propose a well thought out and feasible project that demonstrates creativity and a commitment to promote NYU Accra.

Accra Community Service Grant ($1,000)

Because of student interest, community service is a very strong and exciting component of the study away experience in Ghana. Volunteers donate their time regularly to over a dozen meaningful service organizations. Past students have found this aspect of the program personally rewarding and a great opportunity to give something back to the society. Each semester ten students studying at NYU Accra will receive the $1,000 Community Service Grant. Awards granted based on merit and need.

Essay Question: Community Service is a hallmark of the NYU Accra program with nearly 90% of students participating in some form of volunteer or internship. Please describe how you expect participating in community service will impact your study away experience.

Antonia S. Ranieri International Scholars Fund ($1,500)

NYU's Center for Ancient Studies offers small grants for summer or term-time study through its ANTONINA S. RANIERI INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARS FUND. These grants are intended to support academic travel abroad by Arts and Science undergraduates and graduate students who are studying any aspect of the ancient world. Grants vary, but are generally under $1,500 and may be taken in conjunction with other awards. The Ranieri Fund supports both independent study (e.g., research at foreign libraries) and participation in formal programs (e.g., Goethe Institut language courses, archaeological digs, and international conferences).

Students should submit a brief description of their project explaining how it relates to their studies, an itemized budget, a CV, and a detailed letter of support from an FAS faculty sponsor. Applications are due by Friday, March 23 for summer or the next academic year. Decisions will be announced on or about Friday, April 20, 2012.

Need-Based Study Away Grant ($1000 - $5000)

Need-based study abroad grants of $1000 - $5000 per semester are available to help students with demonstrated financial need defray the costs associated with studying abroad. Grants are awarded as credit posted to your NYU student account.

Essay Question: From a financial standpoint, what impact would this scholarship have on your education? State any special personal or family circumstances affecting your need for financial assistance.

Incoming NYU Transfer Students are awarded financial aid packages as determined by the NYU Office of Financial Aid. Contact the Office of Financial Aid with any questions.

External Scholarships

Scholarships for study abroad are available through many organizations. Below are external scholarships that our students have received in the past.

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship (up to $8,000)

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a congressionally funded program sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education. Awards range from $2000 - $8000 per semester.

Keep in mind you can apply for the award even if your study abroad application is still pending. If you wait for your application results, you might miss the deadlines!

How to Apply:

Visit www.iie.org/gilman to learn more about the Gilman scholarship and to complete the on-line application. Please review the eligibility requirements carefully, keeping in mind only students currently receiving a federal Pell Grant will be considered.

Read the Application Tips and complete the online application by midnight on March 5, 2013. The application includes three main sections: personal data, Statement of Purpose Essay, and Follow-On Project Proposal. You’ll also be asked to select a Study Abroad and Financial Aid Adviser. See adviser details below.

Complete the Gilman Authorization form by March 5, 2013. *This is the only way to ensure that your application will be certified by both advisers. We are unable to certify your application without your signed form on file.

Diversity Abroad Scholarships ($1,000)

Diversity Abroad offers $1,000 scholarships for study abroad. These scholarships are only available for students studying abroad on programs offered by a Diversity Abroad member organization (NYU is a Diversity Abroad member.)

Economically disadvantaged students, African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic/Latino and Native-American students are strongly encouraged to apply.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarships to Germany

Program Deadline: January 31st, 2013

DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship to Germany 2013-2014
Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany. The goal of this program is to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities. Preference will be given to students whose projects or programs are based at and organized by a German university. Scholarships are available either as part of an organized study abroad program or as part of an individual, student-designed study abroad semester or year.

Be aware, that the deadline of January 31st 2013 is for students wishing to study in Germany between fall 2013 through July 2014.

The scholarship committee is looking for students who:
are currently second and third year students and will be in their third and fourth year during their stay in Germany
are seeking DAAD support for a 4-10 month period in Germany during the German academic year.
possess outstanding academic records and personal integrity, as evinced by both their grades and letters of recommendation.
have well-defined study, research or internship plans for their stay in Germany.
submit the DAAD language evaluation form with their application, although German language competency is not mandatory.
demonstrate an interest in contemporary German and European affairs and who explain the significance of their project in Germany to their future studies, research or professional goals.
are enrolled, full-time students in an undergraduate degree-granting program at an accredited North American college or university.
will return to the US or Canada after the scholarship period to complete their Bachelor's degree.

National Security Education Program Boren Undergraduate Scholarships (up to $20,000)

Funding from the National Security Education Program (NSEP) supports U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests: Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Up to $20,000 will be awarded to undergraduates and $30,000 to graduate students depending on cost and length of program.

Boren Awards provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study in Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East, where they can add important international and language components to their educations.

All Boren Scholarship applicants must be in contact with the Boren Campus Representative in the Office of National Scholarships by January so that she can both provide advisement and have the time to produce a formal evaluation of all applications prior to the final deadline in early February. The Boren deadline falls only once per academic year, so candidates must apply well before they know whether they are admitted to a program abroad, and often before they even apply to said program.

Lord Acton Memorial Scholarship

The Executive Committee is pleased to announce that the Lord Acton Memorial Scholarship is now open for applications from students who will be studying abroad in the UK during the 2013/14 academic year.

The scholarship is open to undergraduate students who are currently enrolled at a US college or university, and who will be studying abroad in the UK for at least one term/semester in the 2013/14 academic year.

31 May 2013 - Winner Announced

All applicants must have two references in support of their application for the AASAP/UK Lord Acton Memorial Scholarship. At least one reference must be completed by an academic. Information Sheet for Referees
