If you are a visiting student spending a semester or year at an NYU Global Academic Center you should be aware of the following funding opportunities:
In many cases, non-NYU students who receive financial aid from their home school are able to apply some or all of their financial aid toward studying abroad through NYU. To initiate the transfer process, visit the financial aid office at your home institution ASAP and ask to have a consortium agreement established with NYU. This allows your school to process federal aid and transfer it to NYU for a semester or year abroad.
The Office of Financial Aid of your home institution should fax the form to our office at (212) 995-4103, email a scanned copy to global.admissions@nyu.edu, or mail to the NYU Office of Global Programs at 110 East 14th Street, New York, NY 10003. Consortium forms are due to our office by May 1st if applying for the fall and November 1st for spring semester.
Need-based study abroad grants of $1000 - $5000 per semester are available to help students with demonstrated financial need defray the costs associated with studying abroad. Grants are awarded as credit posted to your NYU student account. For consideration for need-based aid, you must submit a copy of your SAR (Student Aid Report), most recent Financial Aid Award Letter and complete the online application with essay. Please send as an email attachment to kate.bruce@nyu.edu or hard copy to NYU Global Programs atten: Kate Bruce, 110 E 14th Street, Lower Level, NY, NY 10003.

Essay Question: From a financial standpoint, what impact would this scholarship have on your education? State any special personal or family circumstances affecting your need for financial assistance.
Merit-based scholarships of $2,000 are available to non-NYU students who are studying abroad at an NYU Global Academic Center. Recipients are selected based on merit, intent, and quality of application materials.

New Freshmen from Non-NYU Schools
New Freshmen from non-NYU schools are not eligible for scholarships or federal financial aid opportunities, nor education bank loans for participation in the study abroad programs.
The Department of State's Gilman Scholarship, which is available for both the fall and spring terms, is a federal grant ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 and is reserved to students currently receiving federal Pell Grants. Award decisions are based on both merit and need. There are three deadlines you must abide by for the Gilman Scholarship that can be found on their web site. The deadline to complete the online portion of the application for summer 2013 and fall 2013 is March 5, 2013.

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provide scholarships of up to $5000 per semester and $7000 per academic year for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.
Visit the Freeman-ASIA website to learn more about the Freeman Award and to carefully review the deadlines and eligibility requirements, keeping in mind only US citizens or permanent residents who currently receive financial aid and are taking undergraduate courses abroad in any of the following countries will be considered: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam.
Students who plan to attend NYU's study abroad program in Berlin, Germany should apply for a DAAD scholarship if they meet the eligibility criteria, which can be found on the DAAD website. The deadline to apply for scholarships for the 2011-2012 academic year is January 31, 2011.
Please note that the application requires a Statement of Support and Credit Eligibility that NYU Office of Global Programs must complete. To allow ample time for processing, you must submit this form to NYU Office of Global Programs at least two weeks prior to the deadline.

Diversity Abroad offers $1,000 scholarships for study abroad. These scholarships are only available for students studying abroad on programs offered by a Diversity Abroad member organization (NYU is a Diversity Abroad member.)
Economically disadvantaged students, African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic/Latino and Native-American students are strongly encouraged to apply.

Boren Awards provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study in Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East, where they can add important international and language components to their educations.
Boren Scholarships provide undergraduate students up to $20,000 for an academic year's study abroad. Boren Fellowships provide graduate students up to $30,000 for language study and international research. The application deadline for the 2012 - 2013 Boren Fellowship is January 31 and the deadline for the Boren Scholarship is February 9. For more information please see http://www.borenawards.org/.
