Internships

Get out of the classroom and immerse yourself in the city! Gain invaluable hands-on work experience! Make connections! Discover Shanghai through a diverse set of organizations in the arts, migrant services, environmentalism, media, business and law.

NYU Shanghai has two great ways for students to get involved in the community:

The for credit internship program offers a ten-hour a week experience with a required weekly seminar for a total of 4 credits (application required, details below).

The non-credit internship program  is open to all students, not for credit, and generally involves less hours per week than the academic internship program. No advanced application is required for this program. Students will work to secure internshp placements at the internship fair during orientation on site.

Students in both programs learn more about Chinese society, culture, and professional life through placements with agencies addressing important social, cultural and urban issues. You must be flexible, open minded, adaptable, a self-starter and ready for the challenge of new situations and cross-cultural engagement.

Required Internship Seminar Course Description

Enrollment by Permission only; application required (instructions below)

This seminar is designed to complement and enhance the internship experience. Students will learn to reflect upon and critically examine their field work in order to show what their particular, concrete experience reveals about life in contemporary China. Throughout the course each student will develop an independent research project that provides a theoretical framework and argument within which to analyze their internships. Seminars will be divided into two sections. The first part will focus on individual work place experience and research projects. Students will report on their work environment, their tasks and the structure and culture of their organizations. In the first weeks we will work together to develop research topics, shape projects, discuss techniques for embedding empirical experience into theoretical discussions and determine research methodology. From week 6 these discussions will shift focus and individual presentations will begin. The second part of each seminar will be devoted to reading based discussions, focused on some of crucial issues (e.g. migration, sustainability, political reform, cyberculture etc.), which are shaping contemporary life in urban China.

Internship Opportunities

Responsibilities vary by agency but we require all students to be involved in projects that contribute to their understanding of the organization and its approach to social issues. This might include project implementation, participation in relevant meetings, research, and production of documents or other materials.

The following is a preliminary and tentative list. Flexibility is important.

Students interested in interning with an organization that is not on the list of available internships should indicate this organization on their application and work with the internship coordinator to finalize internship parameters.

Arts & Culture

ART LABOR is a contemporary gallery located in the former French Concession area of central Shanghai, opened by Canadian director Martin Kemble, with an independent and international program, and a real concern for our artists and their work. The gallery’s emphasis is on originality and high quality of production in all media, with ethical representation and marketing. The gallery is based in Shanghai because it is fast becoming the center of artistic creation and financial power in Asia.

ART LABOR is curious about Shanghai’s new identity. The gallery’s main objective is to promote the artistic pursuit of answers to what this identity is and what it will become. ART LABOR supports artists who do not necessarily require a national identity, a label on their production, artists which are comfortable or uncomfortable in their own skin, equals in any artistic scene in the world today.

Due to a love for China, Martin decided to set up a self-funded gallery in Shanghai. However, at ART LABOR, artists are seen first and simply as artists, free of national brand. The gallery intends to exhibit original works and bring some fresh air into a climate where art has become a bit overly familiar and obvious to the habituated observer of the Chinese art scene.

The artists represented are approximately half Chinese and half from other countries: British, Austrian, Canadian, Japanese, and other nationalities. Represented artists are making truly original and meaningful work, whether intellectually, emotionally effecting or simply aesthetically pleasing.
