The International Visitors Program

The International Visitors Program provides grants to departments and schools to invite distinguished scholars from abroad.

Visitors should spend at least two weeks in residence on campus, and contribute to the intellectual life of the University through teaching, participation in meetings, conferences, seminars, and/or collaboration with faculty on research projects. Ideally, the visitor will be of interest to both students and faculty.

Grants from the International Visitors Program are to be used to cover the travel and living expenses of the scholar while on campus. The maximum grant is $5,000.

The Office of Global Programs will accept nominations for the International Visitors Program until May 1, 2007 for next academic year. A cross-school selection committee of faculty will review the nominations, and awards will be announced in mid-May.

Guidelines

The following criteria are used to select the visitors.

Strong preference is given to proposals that are of interest to more than one department or school, and the application should describe in detail the type of departmental and interdepartmental activities that will take place and their relevance to the intellectual life of NYU. Ideally the visitor will be of benefit to both students and faculty.

Preference is given to visitors who engage in cooperative projects that are likely to continue beyond the period of the visit.

Awards should not be used to bring established collaborators to NYU. The selection committee will, however, consider arguments that support the repeat invitation of a particular visitor.

Letters from faculty in the relevant departments, affirming their interest in the proposed visitor and the format for the visit, should accompany the application. Deans and Department Chairs need not submit an individual letter of support, but must sign off on the application indicating their interest in the visitor.

The application must include the following information:

  • A description of proposed activities during the visit including how the visit will contribute to the intellectual life of the university
  • Letters of support from the relevant faculty in other Departments
  • The length of the stay and estimated dates of the visit
  • The projected expenses of the visit
  • A curriculum vitae for the proposed visitor

The main objective of the application is to show how the academic life of the university will benefit from the stay of the proposed visitor.

Nominations must be accompanied by the application form that follows.

The deadline for the receipt of applications is May 1, 2007. Please note that applications in this cycle should be submitted for visits to take place in either the fall 2007 or spring 2008 terms.

Applications and supporting materials will be reviewed by a selection committee of senior faculty that will make its recommendation on the allocation of funds in early spring. The next award cycle will be announced in fall 2007.
