Fellowships

Open to Faculty and Ph.D. Students

The Global Fellowship Program is designed to support teaching, academic research, artistic endeavors and other scholarly activities related to, or involving a residency at, an NYU Global Site. The Program is open to all NYU faculty members, faculty affiliated with an NYU Global Site, and NYU Ph.D. students. Eligible locations for 2008-2009 include: Accra, Buenos Aires, Florence, London, Madrid, Paris, Prague and Shanghai.

Fellowships are intended to support short visits of up to one semester with limited funds available for partial support, for example, to augment a sabbatical leave, or to help offset travel, living expenses or similar costs associated with a residency. Ideally, all funded projects will also include meaningful activities that are of benefit to students and resident faculty at the Global Site. For example, in addition to their independent research, a fellowship recipient may opt to teach, offer a lecture, or organize a conference, symposium or similar public activity that complements the academic program.

Proposed projects for the current funding cycle should commence no later than May 1, 2009.

Open to NYU Faculty

The International Visitors Program provides grants to departments and schools to invite distinguished scholars from abroad. Visitors should spend at least two weeks in residence on campus, and contribute to the intellectual life of the University through teaching, participation in meetings, conferences, seminars, and/or collaboration with faculty on research projects. Ideally, the visitor will be of interest to both students and faculty. Grants from the International Visitors Program are to be used to cover the travel and living expenses of the scholar while on campus. The maximum grant is $5,000.

The Office of Global Programs sponsors the Sir Harold Acton Undergraduate Fellowship each fall term. The award is in honor of the generous patron who bequeathed his estate in Florence, La Pietra, to NYU. Each spring a group of students are selected and awarded grants in the amount of $2,000-$5,000 to use towards their fall semester abroad at an NYU site. Decisions are based on both merit and need.

Open to Graduate Students and Undergraduates

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, and administered by the Institute for International Education (IIE), the Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers opportunities for recent graduates, postgraduate candidates, and developing professionals and artists to conduct career-launching study and research abroad. Funding is also available to undergraduates with advance approval by the College of Arts and Science.
