Prospective Summer Students
The Gallatin School summer curriculum offers students the opportunity to explore any of several clusters, theme-driven collections of classes and internships. You can choose courses that approach a broad topic from a number of perspectives through a variety of formats, from analytical inquiry to artistic expression to practical experience. Someone interested in the relationship between politics and culture, for example, could take a course such as Theorizing Politics (reading Marx, Machiavelli, and Foucault) while also doing an internship in a city councilmember's office.
Summer Curriculum
New York City
Explore the meaning of life in this exciting city through urban design, writing, and the visual arts.
Politics & Culture
Examine culture and political theory as well as the ways in which power and culture intersect.
Visual & Performing Arts
Investigate the meaning and impact of human expressive activity.
Creative Writing
Engage in the process of writing, from traditional short-story writing to newer genres that challenge the borders of fact and fiction.
Within these clusters, there are several types of courses that offer different approaches to learning:
- Interdisciplinary seminars are small classes focused on reading important texts and discussing complex ideas and theories.
- Arts workshops aim at developing the artist-scholar by combining personal creative work in a variety of media with rigorous academic inquiry.
- Writing courses, usually taught by professional writers, engage students in producing texts in a number of genres and settings.
- Community learning projects get students involved in direct action in the city and in careful reflection on that experience.
- Internships put students into firsthand experiences in a huge array of work sites, from government to the corporate sector, from arts organizations to grassroots groups
Summer Housing
For as little as $150 a week (which includes a meal plan), students may stay in NYU housing. Housing is guaranteed to students who are enrolled for course work or a Gallatin internship during the summer.
