Before You Apply
As a Gallatin student, you will be taking the majority of your course work in the various other graduate schools of NYU. It is important to be familiar with the specific schools, departments and courses in these schools before you have actually applied to Gallatin in order to see if your proposed program is feasible. We recommend that you visit the websites of the NYU schools in which you might take courses prior to writing your Statement of Purpose for your application for admission. Please note that Gallatin students may not take classes in the School of Medicine and the College of Dentistry. Courses at the School of Law may be taken on a limited basis and only with permission of the instructor.

NOTES ABOUT THE STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Students who are most successful at Gallatin are those who have a fairly well-defined, focused, and integrated program at the point of application. Although you are not expected to know exactly which courses you will be taking, it is recommended that you research the other departments at NYU in which you might study. Be sure that NYU offers the courses you want. There may be a temptation to want to design a program that incorporates too many areas and is, thus, too broad in scope. Think about creating a curriculum in which there is a link among the various components. Think about how you will integrate your academic interests. You will want to narrow your selection of departments to two or three disciplines. Please be as specific as possible in your statement. For example, if you want to study literature and history, tell us what genre of literature and how it connects with your interest in history. Once you have been admitted, your advisor will carefully guide you in choosing courses, refining your program of study, and selecting a thesis topic. However, it will be most helpful to the Admissions Committee if you have written a Statement of Purpose that reflects an understanding of both Gallatin and the other schools at NYU that are relevant to your program.
