The Gallatin student is self-directed, self-motivated and disciplined. Some of our students come to Gallatin directly from undergraduate schools; others have been working professionally and returning to school. A strong academic background is expected and students in Gallatin come from a wide range of undergraduate disciplines. While each program at Gallatin is unique, all of our students enter with a clear and focused idea of what they wish to study in graduate school.
Each candidate’s application is evaluated carefully by the Faculty Admissions Committee on their potential to succeed in an individualized program of study of either a professional, scholarly, or creative nature. The Committee considers the candidate’s academic record, the application essay, the applicant’s professional experience (if relevant), and the letters of recommendation. Applicants may also submit any documentation or materials that they feel will allow the Admissions Committee to better understand their records of accomplishment. The Gallatin School does not require standardized test scores, such as the Graduate Record Examination, but applicants who have taken such examinations may submit their scores.
The Statement of Purpose is a key component in determining the feasibility of the applicant’s proposed program of study. Therefore, it is important that you learn not only about the Gallatin curriculum but that you also research the various other NYU departments in which you may study. In your statement, you should discuss how you would integrate studies from these selected departments to develop your individualized concentration at Gallatin.
You may attend Gallatin on a full-time or part-time basis and there is entry in the fall or spring semester.
