Message from the Dean

Flexibility and rigor characterize the academic program of the Gallatin School of Individualized Study. We teach students how to face a world of many possibilities by asking appropriate questions and searching for creative answers. We help them develop their passions and interests into academically sound programs.

Let me highlight three of our major features that help prepare students for an entire working life during which they are likely to have many careers. First, through our well-developed advisement system, we help students construct a concentration that has both depth and breadth and that responds to their interests. Second, we ensure that all students learn to read critically by engaging them in the study of traditional great books and other significant texts. Finally, we offer a variety of opportunities in experiential education, such as internships, private lessons, community learning, and independent studies, so that students can have the practical experience they need for the work world.

Our personalized education program both allows and teaches independent thinking and versatility. This unusual combination of innovation, practicality, and academic excellence takes place in the context of a dynamic university in a great city. If your child is looking for an intellectually challenging and exciting program, I welcome you to learn more about Gallatin.

The Gallatin Vision

At the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, we provide a distinctive and superior liberal arts education for a diverse student body. This kind of academic experience fosters passionate intellectual commitments from learners and prepares them for a world in which managing knowledge is key to success. Guided by the philosophy that student learning is the key goal, the faculty cultivate an environment conducive to intellectual exploration across traditional academic disciplines and insist on active student engagement in developing the direction of their own education. Coupled with a highly specialized and effective advisement system that guides students, this philosophy has placed our school in a strong and competitive position.

Publications for Parents

Gallatin parents receive the School newsletter, Gallatin Today. This publication highlights important events and happenings in our community, as well as the achievements of Gallatin students and alumni. In addition, the School sends a special publication just to parents: From the Desk of the Dean. Each issue is a chance for parents to hear directly from Gallatin's dean, to "meet" a Gallatin facuty member or administrator, to learn more about important components of the Gallatin program, and to find out about resources just for parents.
