Gallatin Newington-Cropsey Fellows Take Research Trip

In December 2007, Gallatin professors Laurin Raiken and Antonio Rutigliano took the five 2007-2008 Gallatin Newington-Cropsey Fellows—Kristin Scarola, Kimberlyn David, Magdalena Santos, Leanne Shear, and Rocco Natale—on a research trip to Washington, D.C. sponsored by the Newington-Cropsey Foundation. Along with distinguished sculptor Greg Wyatt and Fellows Program Administrator Josephine DeCaro, the students visited major museums and research libraries to pursue research on their master’s theses.

During the visit, the fellows carried out research at the National Archives Library, the Newseum Research Collections, the Hirshhorn Museum Research Library, the National Museum of Women in the Arts Research Center, Ford’s Theater, and various collections of the Library of Congress. They were given tours and opportunities for research by Richard Kuhta, librarian of the Folger Shakespeare Library and Dr. John Hagood, research librarian at the National Gallery of Art. At the Folger, Wyatt led an exciting tour of his Shakespeare Sculptures in the "Elizabethan Garden". Professor Rutigliano visited the outstanding Edward Hopper and Turner exhibits at the National Gallery of Art while Professor Raiken worked on developing curriculum for NYU at the National Museum of the American Indian.

The purpose of the Gallatin Newington-Cropsey Fellowship is to help students advance towards the completion of their graduate thesis projects by giving them special opportunities to pursue their research and writing. Fellows attend the Academy of Art at the Newington-Cropsey Foundation to utilize the research library, grounds, and facilities; they participate in seminars throughout the year to discuss research topics; and they attend this annual trip to Washington, D.C., which helps them develop connections for all of their future research.
