Alumna Manuela Goren Creates Gallatin Scholarship Fund
In her 20 years plus as a journalist and correspondent for Italian Condè Nast Publications, Gallatin alumna Manuela C. Goren (BA ’00) has written about the lives of some of the best-known people in the entertainment world. However, six years after graduating from NYU, Manuela and her husband, James, made a permanent commitment to unknown undergraduates in financial need.
The Manuela and James Goren Family Scholarship Fund, established in the fall of 2006, is awarded to Gallatin students based on financial need, with the aim of increasing diversity at the school.
“There’s a need for scholarships,” Manuela Goren, who graduated with a concentration in cinema studies, explained. “We need to keep our focus on the students and recognize that many of them deserve to come to NYU and Gallatin, but don’t have the means.”
“At Gallatin, we feel that our classrooms are richer and our community life more stimulating when we have diverse voices participating in them,” added Interim Dean Ali Mirsepassi. “I am so pleased that Manuela and James have established this fund, which will surely have an impact in the lives of our current and future students.”
The first scholarship was awarded to Travis Moe (BA ’09) in the spring of 2007. A Boulder, Colorado native, Moe’s academic interests lie in philosophy, sociology, and writing. He has aspirations to become both an author and a professor, and has already completed drafts of two full-length books.
Goren, who hails from Italy, has a degree in architecture from Milan’s Politecnico University. She first heard about Gallatin from her friend, actress Isabella Rossellini, who attended the school from 1988 to 1990. Currently writing for the monthly magazine of La Repubblica and putting together a talk-radio show called “Flick Chicks,” Goren has been a Gallatin Dean’s Council member since 2003 and is also a founding member of the NYU Women’s Initiative Steering Committee since 2004.
The 2007-2008 Manuela and James Goren Family Scholarship Fund awardee will be named in the fall of 2007. Students interested in applying for this scholarship (or any other Gallatin need-based aid) should complete the Application for Supplemental Scholarship Aid, available on the Gallatin website at the beginning of the fall semester registration period. The deadline for submission of applications for aid is the first day of the fall semester.
