Special Permission to Register
You may occasionally be blocked from registering for a course until you receive special permission from the department offering it. Departments require special registration permission for several reasons—they restrict registration to their own students; they want to ensure that all students meet prerequisites; they require instructor approval, etc.
It is your responsibility as a student to obtain any necessary registration approval from the school or department offering a restricted course; departments give special registration permission only to students, not to advisers. If you are not on campus, you may not be able to register for these courses at this time.
Depending on the department, special registration permission will take
one of the following forms:
- Access Code – A department may issue you a four-digit access code that you’ll use when you register on Albert. Access codes are unique and can be used one time only.
- Written Permission – A department may give you a memo on departmental letterhead stating that you have permission to register for a restricted course. Students in this situation cannot register for these courses using Albert. You should bring that memo (and any other paperwork the department gives you) to Gallatin’s Office of Student Services, 715 Broadway, 6th Floor (212) 998-7370. A student services representative will review the paperwork and tell you how to proceed.
- Registration by the department – A department may tell you that you have been approved to take one of their courses and that a departmental representative will enroll you in the course. Students in this situation cannot register for these courses using Albert, nor can they register in person. If you are informed by a department that the registration will be completed for you, you must verify this registration activity:
- Ask the departmental representative when s/he expects to complete the registration
- Check Albert to make sure the course appears on your schedule
- If the course does not appear on your schedule within a reasonable amount of time, you should contact the departmental representative
How do you know if a course is restricted?
Most restricted courses are noted as such on the “Course Status” section
of Albert, but not always. You may not know prior to registration whether
or not a course requires special permission; if so, Albert will give
you a message at the time of registration that permission is required.
How do you obtain special registration permission?
You
should contact the department offering the course to determine if you
are eligible to enroll and/or if you need special registration permission.
For assistance with locating a department, contact Gallatin’s Office
of Student Services, (212) 998-7370, and ask to speak to a student services
representative.
