When is Gallatin's Summer Orientation, and what happens there?

Gallatin's Summer Orientation starts with check-in from 9.00 to 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23, and ends at approximately 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 25. Orientation is the first opportunity you have to meet your fellow members of the Class of 2013, the faculty, your faculty adviser, your class adviser, and Gallatin upperclassmen. In addition to meeting people and making friends, you will have a chance to explore the campus, learn more about Gallatin and register for Fall semester classes. (back to top)

When will I get full information about Summer Orientation?

We will mail out and post on-line the full Orientation program in mid-May. We mail the program only to students who have paid the admission deposit and returned the Candidate's Reply Form to NYU's Office of Undergraduate Admission, so make sure you have done so by that time. (back to top)

Is there a fee to attend Summer Orientation?

Yes, $250.00. This covers the cost of food, accommodation and all activities for the three-day program. NOTE: The fee for students who check in on Monday, June 23 is $280. (back to top)

Is there a deadline to pay the fee?

You must register and pay for Orientation by Monday, June 8. We cannot refund Orientation fees after Friday, June 12. (back to top)

Can my parents attend Summer Orientation with me?

On the first day of Orientation, we host an afternoon parent Orientation program. This includes a walking tour of NYU, an information session, and an early evening reception. On the morning of the second day of Orientation, parents can attend workshops on housing, financial aid, and student services. The student Orientation program is for students only. (back to top)

Will I have free time to visit friends or see my parents who will be staying in the city?

No. Orientation requires your full participation from the time you check in at the designated dormitory until the time you leave, so you will not be able to meet up with your family or friends during this time. You will be busy from early in the morning to late in the evening. (back to top)

Who will be my academic adviser, and how is this decided?

Gallatin's Office of Advising pairs you with an adviser based on the information you provide on the First-Year Questionnaire. During Orientation, your adviser will meet with you individually, introduce you to the system of advising at Gallatin, discuss how to develop an individualized plan of study, and approve your classes for the fall. Depending on their own plans for the summer, advisers may also be available by e-mail in the summer months after Orientation. But you can always contact Gallatin's Office of Advising, at (212) 998-7320, with any questions, or e-mail Gail Drakes, the Class of 2013 Adviser, at gjd210@nyu.edu. When you return to school, you should schedule an appointment with your adviser during the first week of classes. In addition to your adviser, at Orientation you will have the support of a student Orientation leader who can help you with your transition to Gallatin. (back to top)

What's the difference between my academic adviser and my class adviser?

Your academic adviser will help you with any academic questions you have, especially as you select classes and begin to conceptualize and build your concentration. Gail Drakes, your class adviser, will help you and your academic adviser resolve any bureaucratic issues that may arise. Gail will also help you throughout the year if your academic adviser is unavailable or otherwise unable to answer a question. (back to top)

Can my adviser answer questions about financial aid and tuition payment?

Your Gallatin adviser is an academic adviser. If you have questions about non-academic issues such as financial aid, tuition, or housing, you should contact the appropriate NYU office.

Office of Financial Aid, (212) 998-4444

Office of the Bursar, (212) 998-2800

Department of Housing, (212) 998-4600

What if I can't make it to Summer Orientation?

We strongly recommend that you make every effort to attend Orientation as it is an irreplaceable experience, both academically and socially. Orientation provides a beginning for your class. If you are absolutely unable to attend, please contact the Office of Student Affairs at Gallatin, at (212) 998-7380. (back to top)

Does NYU have other orientations that I can attend in addition to Gallatin's?

From September 2nd - September 5th, NYU's Office of Student Life hosts Welcome Week. This is a series of over 250 social activities, information fairs, and group discussions that involves new students from all of the colleges and schools within NYU. The NYU?Student Resource Center will mail you information about Welcome Week in July. In addition, the various residence halls all have their own Orientation programs. You will learn more about these when you receive your housing assignment, which happens in early August. (back to top)
