Obtaining adviser approval & registration clearance
Obtaining Adviser Approval & Registration Clearance
Gallatin students select and register for classes in consultation with their primary advisers. In general, when this consultation occurs usually depends on the adviser’s and student’s personal working styles. Some advisers prefer to have preliminary discussions with their advisees before the students begin searching for classes on Albert. Other advisers prefer that their advisees compile tentative lists of possible courses before they meet to discuss registration. You should talk with your adviser about what system works best for both of you.
NOTE TO ENTERING FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS: All first-year students should look for courses on Albert prior to Summer Orientation. If you are a first-year student who will be attending Summer Orientation, please understand that any list of classes you put together will be very tentative as your adviser will help you refine your choices. If you are a first-year student who is unable to attend Summer Orientation, you should discuss your tentative list of classes with an academic adviser in Gallatin’s Office of Advising. Please call (212) 998-7320 for more information. You will meet your actual primary adviser in August. |
In any case, understand that you will be able to register only after three steps have occurred:
1. You have received your Adviser's Approval to register.
2. You have received Clearance to Register by Gallatin’s Office of Student Services.
3. Your Registration Time has passed.
ADVISER APPROVAL
Your adviser approves your list of proposed courses by signing the “Undergraduate Plan of Study” form. You must complete one of these forms every semester including Summer, if you plan to register for Summer classes.
The Plan of Study is divided into three main sections: student information; planned course selections; and academic interests, goals, and progress. You should complete all three areas. NOTE: The section on “Planned Course Selections” requires information that you can obtain from Albert. Be sure to note the 5-digit Call Number of each proposed course, as you will need these codes to register. Remember that not all courses require Access Codes.
You can obtain a blank “Undergraduate Plan of Study” from the wall brackets located near the elevators of every floor of the Gallatin School. You can also fill it out (but not submit it) online at: http://www.nyu.edu/gallatin/current/ba/forms.html. If you fill out the “Plan of Study” online, you will need to print it prior to meeting with your adviser. Entering students unable to attend Summer Orientation should contact Gallatin’s Office of Advising at (212) 998-7320.
CLEARANCE TO REGISTER
Once your adviser has signed your “Undergraduate Plan of Study,” you must take the form to Gallatin’s Office of Student Services, 715 Broadway, 6th Floor, where a staff person will change your records on Albert to show that you have received your adviser’s approval. This electronic activity constitutes your “Clearance to Register.”
REGISTRATION TIME
NYU’s Office of the Registrar calculates registration times for all current students. The time is based on the number of credits a student has accrued, with more advanced students registering earlier than students with fewer credits. Students may register any time after their registration time has passed, provided they have received their adviser’s approval and been cleared to register by the Office of Student Services. To view your registration time, go to the “Registration Status” tab on Albert.
The registration time for entering first-year students is set for 9 a.m. on the third day of Summer Orientation.
IF YOU ENCOUNTER DIFFICULTIES…
Students who are not able to be in New York City, or who otherwise encounter difficulty with obtaining adviser approval or clearance to register, should contact Gallatin’s Office of Advising—418 Lafayette Street , 7th Floor, (212) 998-7320—and ask to speak with an adviser.
