First-Year Program

All students who enter Gallatin as first-year students (and all transfer students who enter with fewer than 32 credits) are required to take three courses that constitute the First-Year Program: First Year Writing Seminar, First Year Interdisciplinary Seminar, and First Year Research Seminar. The First-Year Seminars are intended to introduce students to the goals, methods, and philosophy of university education and to the interdisciplinary, individualized approach of the Gallatin School.

Courses in the Fall 2009 First-Year Program are listed and described at the link below. This list may be updated.

Please note: In your first semester at Gallatin, you are not permitted to enroll in Gallatin interdisciplinary seminars, advanced writing courses, internships, independent studies or tutorials.

In your second semester, you are permitted to enroll in interdisciplinary seminars and advanced writing courses. You may also apply to enroll in internships, independent studies and tutorials then, but approval is given only under extraordinary circumstances.

All of these learning opportunities will be open to you in your sophomore year. If you have questions, contact Gallatin's Office of Academic Advising at (212) 998-7320.
