Dean's Honor Society

The Dean's Honor Society is an honors program that holds continuing academic seminars and cultural activities for outstanding undergraduate students in their junior or senior years. Members also participate in an annual Spring Break travel colloquium focused around the year’s chosen theme. The Dean's Honor Society serves both to recognize exceptional Gallatin students and to foster a passion for leadership and civic engagement.
Selection for the Dean's Honor Society is based on students’ academic performance at Gallatin and on their demonstrated commitment to community service. Eligible candidates are invited to apply for membership during the spring term and are notified of the result of the application during the summer months.

Purpose and Activities

The Dean's Honor Society (DHS) was created in 1999 to offer special educational and cultural opportunities to exceptional continuing students in the Gallatin School. Members have not only shown excellence in their academic work, but have contributed significantly to the Gallatin, NYU and New York City communities through their commitment to community service.

During the past year, DHS students enjoyed several kinds of activities:

  • A weekend leadership and team building retreat at a camp in upstate New York
  • Bi-weekly meetings with programs on topics of globalization including film screenings and discussions
  • A private conversation with University President, John Sexton
  • Discussion and tour at Human Rights Watch in the Empire State Building
  • Guest lecture series on Latin American Politics including guest lectures, musical performances, and a salsa dancing workshop
  • Weeklong travel to Brazil

The Dean's Honor Society is advised by Samantha Shapses and Erin McLaughlin. (The daily operations of the program are coordinated by Erin McLaughlin, please contact emm427@nyu.edu)
