Individualized Projects

Private Lessons
K50.1701 Variable Credit: 1-4 PASS/FAIL ONLY

Private lessons provide students with the opportunity to earn academic credit for their studies at performing or visual arts studios in the New York area. These studies are meant to supplement work begun in regularly scheduled classes at NYU or to provide students with the opportunity to study areas for which comparable courses at the University are unavailable to Gallatin students. Private lessons may be taken in voice, music, dance, acting, and the visual arts. Lessons are arranged and paid for by the student, and studios and instructors must be approved by the Gallatin School. Credit for private lessons is determined by the number of instruction hours per semester. Students taking private lessons are required to submit a journal and final assessment paper to the faculty adviser.

Internship
K50.1801 Variable Credit: 2-8

Internships offer students an opportunity to work at a business, government agency, school, arts organization, or a wide variety of other sites. Students gain firsthand work experience, learn about the activities of particular kinds of businesses and organizations, and develop skills and knowledge that will help them in pursuing employment after graduation; they also explore the relationship between practical experience and academic theory. Gallatin provides an extensive listing of available internships; students may pursue their own as well. For each credit, students are expected to devote three to four hours per week during the fall and spring semesters, and seven to nine hours per week during the six-week summer sessions. In addition to the weekly hours spent at the internship, students are expected to attend two workshops about internships; negotiate a learning contract with the adviser and supervisor; keep a journal of their daily internship experiences; submit a progress report describing the internship; and write a final paper for the faculty adviser.

Independent Study
K50.1901 Variable Credit: 2-4

In an independent study, students work one-on-one with a faculty member. Often the idea for the project arises out of a regular classroom course, a work-related experience, or some personal interest of the student. With the professor’s assistance, the student prepares a proposal for the study, indicating its title, scope, readings, written work, and final project(s). Credit is determined by the amount of work entailed in the study, and generally, independent studies, like other courses, are 2 to 4 credits. However, with special approval from the associate dean, they may range from 1 to 8 credits. The number of credits is determined by the work to be completed and should be comparable to a Gallatin classroom course worth the same number of credits. Credits also correspond to meeting hours; a four-credit independent study requires at least seven contact hours per term, i.e., a total of seven meeting hours between the teacher and the student per term.

Tutorial
K50.1925 Variable Credit: 2-4

Tutorials are small groups of 2 to 5 students working closely with an instructor on a common topic, project, or skill. Students in the group generally follow a common syllabus with everyone doing the same readings, writing papers on similar topics, etc. Credit is determined by the amount of work (readings and other types of assignments) and should be comparable to that of a Gallatin classroom course. Tutorials also have a minimum number of contact hours: for a four-credit tutorial, the minimum number of contact hours is 14 hours per semester. To register for a Tutorial, students must submit a description of the Tutorial to Gallatin, where it will be reviewed by the associate dean and the curriculum committee. Students in the group should work together with the instructor to write the tutorial proposal.

Maintaining Matriculation
