Course Equivalency

At Gallatin students may earn course equivalency credit for professional experience they may have had before entering the school. Students must demonstrate, through an extensive portfolio of materials, that they have mastered subject matter they would have learned in comparable NYU courses.

Restrictions

  1. Experiences used in applying for course equivalency credit must have taken place prior to admission to Gallatin.
  2. Undergraduate students may apply for a maximum of 32 course equivalency credits. Graduate students may apply for a maximum of 12 credits (combined with transfer credits); half count toward the minimum classroom course requirement, and half count toward the independent study/internships maximum.
  3. Credits will not be evaluated for undergraduate students who intend to graduate with more than 128 credits.
  4. Master's candidates may not apply for course equivalency credit based on experiences for which they were already granted course equivalency credit in the undergraduate Gallatin program or comparable undergraduate programs.

Deadlines

The course equivalency portfolio should be submitted after the completion of one full-time semester or the equivalent (12 credits) in residence at Gallatin but before one-half of the credits required for graduation are completed. Students should not wait until the last year to submit their portfolios. The portfolio may be submitted only once and may not be submitted in the month prior to the student's anticipated date of graduation. The course equivalency portfolio involves an extensive review process and takes a minimum of 12 weeks.
