Studying Abroad

Paris and Prague, Jakarta and Rio: These are places where Gallatin students can study. The central question is how to make study abroad more than just a visit to a foreign country. Many Gallatin students find that studying abroad helps them flesh out or enhance their concentrations. Whether they spent four weeks in Florence for a Gallatin Summer Humanities Seminar or an entire semester in Chiapas studying grassroots activism, students often return to Washington Square saying that their study abroad experience expanded their academic and cultural horizons.
Eligible Gallatin students may participate in several different forms of study abroad:
NYU Sites
NYU maintains sites in Florence, London, Madrid, Paris and Prague. All courses count for NYU credit, and many are taught by full-time NYU faculty. (At some sites, students are permitted to take courses at local universities as well.) The application deadline for Spring semester is Nov. 1; Fall is May 15. For more information and an online application, visit the website of NYU's Study Abroad Office:
NYU Exchange Site
NYU has relationships with about 15 universities all over the world that allow for student exchanges, generally for one semester. For more information, visit the website of NYU's Study Abroad Office:
NYU Study Abroad Courses
Especially during the Summer, different NYU schools and programs offer special courses abroad. In past years, for example, Gallatin has offered courses in Florence, Provence, and the south of England. Application deadlines for Summer courses are generally in mid-March. Gallatin Summer Study Abroad
Join us this summer in Berlin, Germany, Buenos Aires, Argentina, or Florence, Italy!
Gallatin’s intensive three or four-week summer study abroad courses are small, discussion-based seminars with Gallatin faculty that are designed to provide a unique and in-depth exploration of a particular cultural or historical topic found within a foreign country or region. Students experience each location hands-on through visits to museums, galleries, and various sites of historical, cultural, and political significance.

Non-NYU Study Abroad Programs
Provided that they are preapproved by Gallatin's Advisement Office, Gallatin students many participate in study abroad programs operated by other accredited U.S. colleges and universities. Students should be aware that more restrictions apply to non-NYU programs than to ones operated by the University. For more information about non-NYU programs, contact Patrick McCreery in the Gallatin Advisement Office, pgm3871@nyu.edu.
Eligibility
In general, students who want to study abroad should have a 3.0 GPA and no incompletes. Freshmen and second-semester seniors are not permitted to study abroad, and first-semester seniors are greatly discouraged. Gallatin Summer Study Abroad is open to all students who will have completed their freshmen year before beginning the study abroad course. For more information about eligibility, contact the Gallatin Advisement Office.
