Scheduling the Colloquium

Students may take the colloquium once they have completed 108 credits. In most cases, students do the colloquium during their final semester of study. Please see the colloquium calendar for the various deadlines in the colloquium process.

Selecting Your Committee Members

Your committee will consist of your adviser, a member of the full-time Gallatin faculty, and one other NYU faculty member. Please keep in mind that committee members should be appropriate for your colloquium topic. If you do not have specific requests for your committee, Gallatin will help you find appropriate faculty members.

You may also review one of the lists below to locate a panel member for your committee.

Setting a Date and Time

After you submit the book list and rationale, you can proceed with the scheduling process. It is your responsibility to schedule the date and time of your colloquium with committee members. Since the scheduling process may take a few days or even longer (depending on the availability of your committee members), please start this process at least two weeks before the deadline for submitting the registration form.

If you plan to graduate in May, you may want to complete your colloquium in early April, but it is not possible for the Gallatin faculty to schedule all the colloquiums in the space of a couple of weeks. It may be necessary to schedule your colloquium in February or March. Students should also be aware that they may encounter some difficulties in finding committee members or arranging a date for a colloquium in January or September because of the limited availability of faculty during the summer months and winter recess.

Submitting the Registration Form

Once you have selected your committee members and have scheduled a date and time, you will need to submit this information on the "Colloquium Registration" form at . Completed forms should be submitted to Tracy Hollingsworth in the Office of Advising, 715 Broadway, 5th floor. The registration form must be submitted by the deadline specified in the colloquium calendar regardless of any pending approval of the rationale and book list. Approximately two weeks prior to your colloquium date, Gallatin will send a schedule confirmation to committee members, as well as a copy of your rationale and booklist.

If you have already submitted the registration form to Gallatin and you would like to change a panel member or the date and time of your colloquium, you will need to notify Tracy Hollingsworth (pmf3@nyu.edu) at least two weeks prior to the date of your colloquium, and you must confirm a new date/time with all committee members.

Please note the following exceptions: students who have completed all of their degree requirements in the spring or summer may take the colloquium in September until the deadline stated in the colloquium calendar without matriculating for the fall term. Similarly, students who have completed all of their degree requirements in the fall term may take the colloquium in January until the deadline stated in the colloquium calendar without matriculating for the spring term.
