Frequently Asked Questions about Advanced Standing Credits at Gallatin
Q: When is the deadline to post credits for advanced standing?
A: Students can elect to post their credits starting at the end of their sophomore year (when they reach 64 credits) through the middle of their senior year (when they reach 112 credits).
Q: Do I have to post advanced standing credits to my NYU transcript?
A: No. Students may choose not to apply advanced standing credits to their Gallatin degree. Even if students decide not to post advanced standing credits, AP and IB scores can still be used for advanced placement in courses at NYU.
Q: If I decide to post credits and later change my mind, can the college remove them from my transcript?
A: No. For this reason, it is important to carefully consider your options before electing to post credits.
Q: What is the maximum number of credits I am able to post?
A: The maximum number of advanced standing credits allowed FOR AP, IB, Maturity Certificate Exams and college courses taken while you were in high school with grade of “B” or better is 32.
Q: Do advanced standing credits fulfill any Liberal Arts requirements?
A: AP and IB test credits do not fulfill Liberal Arts requirements. However, college-level courses taken prior to entering NYU with grades of “B” or better may fulfill Gallatin's Liberal Arts requirements if they constituted transfer credits rather than high school credits.
Q: What are some reasons to elect to post credits?
A: A student who wishes to graduate early may elect to post advanced placement credits as they will accelerate his or her path towards acquiring 128 credits.
Q: What are some reasons to elect not to post credits?
A: Students who do not wish to graduate early may not want to post advanced standing credits to their Gallatin transcript. The degree in individualized study is a developmental process that requires time for students to hone their concentration and it is not in everyone's best interest to speed up this process. This is of particular concern for students on financial aid whose aid will be discontinued after reaching the 128 credit threshold. Also, students planning to continue to medical school need to complete the entire pre-med sequence of undergraduate courses even if they have equivalent AP scores, and in these cases the student will lose the advanced standing credit.
Q: Who should I contact if I have further questions?
A: Students with general questions about advanced standing should contact Gallatin's Office of Student Services at 212-998-7378 or studentservices.gallatin@nyu.edu. Students with questions about how these credits may affect financial aid should contact University's Financial Aid office at 212-998-4444 or financial.aid@nyu.edu. Your primary faculty adviser and your class adviser are valuable resources when considering whether or not to post advanced placement credits.
Q: What if I register for a course in an area for which I have already received AP credit?
A: Advanced Placement credit is equated to a corresponding college-level course. Students receiving AP credit toward the degree may not take the corresponding college-level course for credit. If they do, they will lose the AP credit.
Q: What special concerns, if any, should I have as a transfer student when choosing whether or not to post advanced standing credit?
A: Transfer students may apply AP and IB credits to their NYU transcript, keeping in mind that transfer students must complete 64 credits after matriculating at Gallatin.
