What is the Office of Advising?
Advising is a central part of the Gallatin Experience. Developing a coherent and rewarding individualized plan of study can be overwhelming, and the Office of Advising is here to help. Our advisers are available throughout the year to help you articulate your educational interests and goals, to help you locate rewarding and appropriate classes, and to help you understand and fulfill degree requirements.
There are three tiers of advising at Gallatin: your primary adviser, your class adviser, and the Gallatin Peer Advising Center (gPAC).
The Office of Advising will help you find a primary adviser who is knowledgeable in your field of study. Of the hundreds of instructors who serve as Gallatin advisers, the Office of Advising will work with you to find a compatible primary adviser with expertise in your area of interest. Your primary adviser will help you plan your schedule and ensure that your program of study has depth, breadth, coherence, and other elements that will help you reach your career and educational goals.
Your Class Adviser will meet with you throughout the semester to provide information about policies and procedures, to check on your degree progress, and to offer other supplementary advising support. The Office of Advising consists of four Class Advisers and as their title suggests, each has been assigned to a class and will follow that class through its senior year. Although each Class Adviser has specific areas of academic and advising expertise and responsibility, Class Advisers are able to perform all functions of the Office of Advising. Below you'll find a list of advising fuctions each Class Adviser is dedicated to as well as contact information for each adviser.
Gallatin Peer Advising Center (gPAC)
Part of the Office of Advising, gPAC is a team of eight Gallatin undergraduate students who provide student-to-student information about academic policy and procedures, NYU programs, and student life in New York City. Members of gPAC work closely with the Office of Advising to connect students to accurate and useful information. Peer advisers are available to speak with students on a walk-in basis Monday through Thursday, 10am to 6pm, at 719 Broadway room 529A. Check out gPAC's Cross Registration Guide, which informs students about the processes for registering in other NYU schools, as well as the gPAC website, which includes a link to gPAC's bi-monthly newsletter that features information about a wide range of advising topics, key deadlines, University resources and student life.
