Continuous Registration

Students are required to be registered continuously at New York University. This may be accomplished by registering for a minimum of 2 credits each academic term (fall and spring) or by paying a matriculation fee for each semester until all degree requirements are satisfied. Students may also apply for a leave of absence. Students who do not maintain continuous registration or obtain a leave of absence are automatically withdrawn from the University and must apply for readmission.

Maintaining Matriculation

If a student is unable to attend classes in a given semester, the student must maintain matriculation by fee. This allows students to maintain their eligibility to register for the following semester without having to apply for readmission. The fee for maintaining matriculation is $75 per semester, plus a nonreturnable registration and services fee. Students do not have to maintain matriculation during the summer sessions.

Undergraduate students may maintain matriculation a maximum of four semesters during their careers, and graduate students may maintain matriculation a maximum of two semesters.

Leaves of Absence

A student may apply for a leave of absence by contacting the Office of Student Affairs. Leaves may be granted for medical reasons, personal hardships, etc., and are generally for not longer than two semesters. When a leave is granted, the student is not required to maintain matriculation, nor will the student be required to apply for readmission so long as he or she returns to the school within the specified time. While on leave, a student may not attend another college or university. The student is required to meet any financial aid or housing deadlines while on leave. If a student is on probation when a leave is granted, the student returns to the school on probation.
