Taking Classes in Other NYU Schools

From the Gallatin Advisement Team

Important advice on choosing NYU courses outside of Gallatin:

A successful Gallatin student is someone who really familiarizes him/herself with all of NYU. To do that, you should know which schools within NYU match your interests. Here are some of the NYU schools where Gallatin students take classes:

  • College of Arts and Science (CAS)
  • Ehrenkranz School of Social Work (ESSW)
  • Stern School of Business (Stern)
  • School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS)
  • Steinhardt School of Education (Ed)
  • Tisch School of the Arts (TSOA)

The simplest way to familiarize yourself with these schools is to get catalogs for each at the NYU Information Center at 50 West 4th Street. Alternately, you can investigate each school’s individual web site for information. A word of warning: Every school at NYU organizes its web site in its own way. You'll have to do a bit of detective work to find what you want on the web.

Follow this sequence when selecting courses in other NYU schools:
  1. Find an interesting course title in the NYU Directory of Classes
  2. Look up the description of the course either in the pertinent school’s bulletin or on line at the school’s web site.
  3. Check on NYU’s web site to verify that the course is open. You cannot register for closed courses.
  4. Obtain any necessary registration approval from the school or department offering the course. This is your responsibility.

You will find specific information about this sequence below.

Keep these IMPORTANT facts in mind:
  • Choosing non-Gallatin courses usually takes a bit more patience than choosing ones in Gallatin. Some departments restrict registration to their own students, and some courses require the permission of the instructor or department to register. Given that you are a freshman and not on campus, you may not be able to register for these courses at this time.
  • In many departments, you'll need to enroll first in introductory courses, which will serve as prerequisites for the more advanced courses you will take later on. The NYU Directory of Classes is organized first by school, then by department. Most departments place their "Intro" courses at the beginning of their lists. If you are starting off in a department, these are the courses you should be considering.
  • If you have Advanced Placement (AP) credits, you should know that each NYU school handles AP credits differently. Some schools allow AP credits to serve as prerequisites for advanced courses, other schools do not. Patrick McCreery will help you figure this out.
  • You should also know that "hot" courses, like those in communications, business or the arts, can be found in many different schools around NYU. Many Gallatin students who have trouble getting into classes into TSOA classes, for example, can find similar classes in the School of Ed, the SCPS, or even Gallatin itself!
