Community Learning Initiative Events

Past Events:

Action Workshop
Tuesday, October 23
5:30-7:30PM
King Juan Carlos Center
53 Washington Square South
Dining Room, 2nd Floor

Is action enough?  Should activists also be intellectuals?  Join Profs. Stephen Duncombe and Rene Francisco Poitevin for a conversation on taking action in a university setting, the difference between organizing and activism, and the ways in which Gallatin students can get involved with CLI to directly affect the community.  First we will hold a discussion on the meaning of action and then spend the second part of the evening planning actions you can take to make a difference in your community.  You'll learn more about the ways in which you can develop your skills in CLI courses, workshop your grant proposals to receive funding for your community projects, and have the opportunity to discuss your ideas with CLI faculty and your peers.

Please visit http://www.leftbusinessobserver.com/Action.html to read "Action Will Be Taken: Left Anti-intellectualism and Its Discontents" to begin your thinking on this important topic.

DIneALOGUE: What is Community Learning at Gallatin? Wednesday, September 26th 6:00PM-8:00PM

Kimmel, Room 905

What is community learning at Gallatin? What are the differences between activism and organizing? How do we define our community and can you really get credit and have an impact? The Gallatin Community Learning Initiative (CLI) bridges the gap between the classroom and the outside world by creating partnerships with community-based organizations, groups, and individuals- as well as other NYU programs- in addressing real world problems and devising and implementing practical solutions. Come Join Professor David Moore, Professor Stephen Duncombe and Professor Rene Poitevin for a conversation about organizing, activism, and action research at Gallatin. Dinner is provided, but spaces are limited! Please RSVP to samantha.shapses@nyu.edu if you would like to attend this event.
