From the Dean

Welcome to the website of the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, "the hidden jewel of NYU." As a fine liberal arts college within a world class research university, Gallatin offers you the best of both worlds: the individual attention and small classes offered by the devoted teaching faculty of a small college, and access to many of the best scholars, scientists, and artists at work in the world today.

Gallatin students take interdisciplinary seminars, arts workshops, writing courses, and other kinds of classes at Gallatin, and also select courses offered by the other schools and colleges at NYU. You will find in our website examples of the many diverse classes and kinds of study available here. We believe that learning happens not only in the classroom but also in workplace and community settings, and our students engage in individualized projects that use New York City as an extended classroom and laboratory. They also contribute their energies and creativity to the city in many ways, while benefiting from the experiences the city has to offer—by teaching literacy skills to immigrants, mounting their artwork through the Gallatin Arts Festival, or embarking on grassroots community service initiatives. Using the resources of the Gallatin School, the whole of NYU, and the unique setting of New York City, Gallatin students design their individual programs of study with the aid of an intensive advising system and a vibrant community.

The Gallatin faculty are a distinguished group of committed teachers, artists, and scholars who have received an impressive number of teaching awards, while also advancing their own research and writing. All are stimulating and exciting teachers who know how to help students pursue their academic passions and goals and develop active intellectual and creative lives.

I hope this website will give you a good sense of the diversity and intensity of life at Gallatin, of the importance of the liberal arts in our educational philosophy, of the value we place on the marriage of artistic perspectives and intellectual pursuits, and of the warmth of our community.

Yours,
Susanne Wofford
Dean
