Nicole Cohen was awarded her Ph.D., with distinction, in Japanese History from Columbia University. She also holds an M.A. in East Asian Languages and Cultures from Columbia. She is completing a book manuscript on the "Children of Empire," which examines the relationship between the Japanese homeland and its colonies, as well as the violent remapping of boundaries, identity, and notions of national belonging in the colonial and postcolonial worlds. Her research and teaching interests include social history, colonialism and imperialism, gender, space, and everyday life. She joins Gallatin after teaching at Columbia as a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Heyman Center for the Humanities, and before that at Yale University as a Postdoctoral Associate with the Council on East Asian Studies.
