Caleb Elfenbein holds a Masters in Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School and a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara. His dissertation offers a critique of classical theories of secularization, exploring the relationship between nineteenth century colonial transformation in Egypt and the emergence of systematic Islamist thought in the mid-twentieth century. Caleb's research and teaching interests include modern Islam, gender in Islam, religion and modernity, colonial and postcolonial studies, religion and government, and modern intellectual history.
