NYU requires students to submit only the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and, for New York State residents, the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) application. (For NYU Abu Dhabi see NYU Abu Dhabi Financial Support.) The FAFSA is the basic form for most student aid programs; be sure to complete all required sections and submit it to the central processor as instructed (do not send it to New York University; your data will be transmitted to us electronically). The priority deadline for NYU is February 15 for new freshmen, and March 1 for all other students (see Deadlines); graduate students should refer to their school or department for specific program deadlines. If you miss the deadline you may still apply, but your eligibility may be affected. Plan in advance and apply at least several weeks before the beginning of the term in which you need funds. Students should be sure to give permission on the FAFSA for their data to be forwarded to New York University: our federal school code number is 002785.
College of Dentistry students must include parents financial data on the FAFSA even if they are financially independent of their parents.
The FAFSA and TAP application must be submitted for each academic year.
Freshman Early Decision applicants who wish to be considered for need-based financial aid must also first submit the Early Decision Financial Aid Application form included with the online Admission Application (see Deadines).
Students seeking financial aid for summer courses must complete a NYU Summer Aid Application in addition to the FAFSA and TAP application.
STUDENT AID REPORT (SAR)
After you submit the FAFSA you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) confirming your application information. Follow the directions to make corrections if necessary (e.g. final income tax return information). Do not send it to NYU. Once the corrections are received by the federal processor you will be sent a final SAR to save for your records. You may also review your SAR record on the FAFSA web site and make changes there: see the "FAFSA Follow-up" area.
NYU AWARD LETTER
Once you are officially admitted to NYU, if you are eligible we will send to you a financial aid award letter which details the types and amounts of aid offered for the school year. Included in your award package is the Financial Aid Guide, a booklet that describes the various forms of aid and reviews the components of your package. (See also financial aid calculators).
LOANS
Your financial aid award letter may suggest several types of loans for which you are eligible, based on the information we have about you (e.g. your anticipated points/credits, your expected housing status, your financial need as determined by the results of the FAFSA, etc.) and, for campus-administered loans, the availability of funds.
Some federal loans, such as the Perkins Loan, Health Professions Student Loan, and Nursing Loan, are administered through the University and require you to complete a promissory note to ensure appropriate loan disbursement and credit on your Bursar bill. Promissory notes are mailed to each student in July/August. Applicants for the spring semester will receive it with their award letter. If, once the semester begins and you were awarded one of these loans, you did not receive a promissory note in the mail, you should immediately phone or visit us to request one, after which you should receive credit for the loan on your bill. (Be sure to keep your mailing address current on Albert.)
Other federal loans are obtained through external sources. Your award package may include information about a "suggested loan." This means that you are eligible for the type and amount of loan specified, based upon the information we have about you at the time the award is offered. It does not mean you will automatically receive the loan, but rather informs you of your current eligibility and how to apply. The suggested loan amount on your award letter is the maximum you are eligible for and is the amount that NYU has certified for you. If you wish to borrow an amount lower than suggested, simply contact the lender AFTER your loan application(s) have been submitted as instructed. For more information about these loans, see Federal Stafford Loan and Federal PLUS Loan.
A variety of additional, non-federal loan programs are also available. See Alternative Loans for more information.
SCHOLARSHIPS
There is no separate application for NYU scholarships. All students are automatically considered for academic (merit-based) and financial need-based scholarships upon their application for admission and financial aid. The FAFSA and the Admissions Application contain all the information needed for scholarship determination.
DOCUMENTATION
Please do not send us tax forms or any other family financial information or supporting documentation unless we ask you for it. Unsolicited material will be destroyed without review. If you have unusual financial circumstances that may affect your financial aid eligibility, contact us AFTER you have received your award letter.
