F&CM   | EETS | Recycling | Recycling Options for NYU Residence Halls

RECYCLING OPTIONS FOR NYU RESIDENCE HALLS

What can you recycle right in your residence hall?

  • Cans and Bottles: Look for bins on each floor or in common collection areas in lounges, basements, and court yards. Can't find the recycling bins in your building? Ask the front desk or your RA for locations.
  • Mixed Paper: Look for bins on each floor or in common collection areas in lounges, basements, and court yards. Can't find the recycling bins in your building? Ask the front desk or your RA for locations.
  • Technoscrap, ink cartridges, batteries, and CFL: Look for these bins in your lobby. Technoscrap includes jewel cases, video tapes, cassettes, diskettes, CDs, DVDs, and all types of cables and wires/wiring.

What do I do if I want to recycle a computer?

  • Start by contacting the manufacturer of the computer. They should have a program to take back their products for recycling for free.
  • Or:
    • Drop off your old computer and peripherals (keyboards, mice, printers, etc.) at any Goodwill store or donation site for free. Goodwill accepts any brand, in any condition. Visit Goodwill Industries for locations.
    • See the Lower East Side Ecology Center site for electronics recycling events.

What can I do with my stuff (clothes, dishes, linens, appliances, and furniture) at the end of the year when I am moving and can't take it with me?

You can donate it to local not-for-profits through the NYU Green Apple Move Out (GAMO) Program. Donation bins will be available in most residence halls. Click here for more info.

Books: Many text books can be sold back to the NYU Bookstore. Other books can be donated through GAMO, dropped at the NYU Recycling Shop or at local donation centers. See Recycling Resources

What about getting rid of stuff (clothes, dishes, linens, appliances, and furniture) during the school year?

You can drop off gently used items for donation at the NYU Recycling Shop (140 E 14th Street 2C-50, ground floor) or check out the list of local donation centers at Recycling Resources. These locations are also great places to pick up gently used things you might need to make your room more comfortable. It is a cheap and environmentally conscientious alternative to buying new.
