  Fast Facts about Recycling

Mixed Paper and Cardboard

Every ton of paper recycled saves more than 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space. (Source: Paper Industry Association Council.)

Recycled paper supplies more than 37% of the raw materials used to make new paper products in the U.S. Without recycling, this material would come from trees. (Source: National Recycling Coalition.)

Glass Bottles

Glass never wears out; it can be recycled forever. We save over a ton of resources for every ton of glasses recycled: 1330 pounds of sand, 433 pounds of soda ash, 433 pounds of limestone, and 151 pounds of feldspar. (Source: The Earth Works Group Recycler's Handbook.)

A ton of glass produced from raw materials creates 384 pounds of mining waste. Using 50% recycled glass cuts waste creation by about 75%.
(Source: The Earth Works Group Recycler's Handbook.)

We get 37.8 pounds of air pollution for every ton of new glass produced. Recycling glass reduces pollution by 14-20%. (Source: The Earth Works Group Recycler's Handbook.)

Recycling one glass bottle saves enough electricity to light a 100 watt bulb for four hours.
(Source: America Recycles Day.)

Aluminium Cans

Americans throw away enough aluminium every three months to rebuild our entire commercial air fleet. (Source: The Eath Works Group Recycler's Handbook.)

Making cans from recycled aluminium cuts related air pollution by 95%. (Source: Can Manufacturing Institute.)

Recycling just one aluminium can saves enough energy to operate a TV for three hours.
(Source: S. CA Electric and Gas Co.)

Plastic Bottles

Recycling 14 20-ounce PET bottles can make one extra large T-Shirt. (Source: Earth911.org)

Half of all polyester carpet made in the U.S. is made from recycled plastic (PET).
(Source: Environmental Protection Agency.)

Ink Cartridges

For every ink or laser toner cartridge that is recycled, two quarts of oil are kept out of landfills. (Source: Recycle for Education.)

The number of ink and laser toner cartridges thrown away in one year is enough to circle the earth. (Source: Recycle for Education.)

Lenght of time to decompose in a landfill:

Aluminium Cans : 100 Years
Plastic Bottles : 700 Years
Ink and Toner Cartridges : 1000 Years
Glass Bottles : 1,000,000 Years
