1. What can I recycle through the NYU Recycling System?

You can recycle all mixed papers, cardboard, all plastics, metals and glass containers, ink and toner cartridges, batteries, technoscrap, universal waste, computers, computer components, TVs and electronics, light bulbs, and components. You can re-use and recycle textbooks and university owned computers and furniture. Please see Recycling Options at NYU for information on how to dispose of recyclables.

2. What happens to NYU's recycling once it is picked up?

Items collected at NYU are recycled through local facilities. Once the items are picked up, they are transported to an appropriate facility, sorted and recycled. In the case of bulk waste this also requires some demolition in order to extract all of the recyclable material from the items.

3. Should I rinse off or rinse out my recycling?

Yes. If you take a minute to rinse off or rinse out any container you are recycling it decreases the chance that the item will contaminate other recylables in the collection bin and be rejected at the recycling center. This is especially important for food containers like aluminium trays. This also makes your work environment more pleasant as it significantly decreases any odors that may emanate from the recycling bins.

4. Should I flatten my recycling?

Yes. By flattening boxes and containers before putting them in the recycling container, you are helping make room for more recycling and reducing the energy related to transportation and bag production required to get the item to a recycler by maximizing the space in the bags and on the hauling trucks.

5. I have confidential paper I would like to recycle, what are my options?

You can shred papers in your office and then put them into a regular recycling bin.

If your office does not have a shredder you can contact one of the companies listed in the NYU purchasing system to provide shredding for you and your office. These companies recycle the materials collected and offer competitive pricing to all NYU clients. To find NYU Purchasing approved shredding companies, enter the system at https://www.purch. nyu.edu/, select Supplier Information, type 'shred' in the search box, and click Go.
