Monthly Portable Fire Extinguisher Inspection Guidelines

NFPA Standard 10-1998 Definition Inspection:

A “quick check” that a fire extinguisher is available and will operate.
It is intended to give reasonable assurance that the fire extinguisher is fully charged and operable.

Monthly visual inspection of fire extinguishers:
  • Is the fire extinguisher in the correct location


  • Is there an inspection/service tag


  • Is there a service tag showing the last date of service and is that date current.


  • Annual service must be by a certified F.D.N.Y. service company and signed by a F.D.N.Y. C of F holder.


  • Are labels and instructional signs present and legible


  • Pressure gauge reading or indicators in the operable range and position.


  • Is the hydrostatic test date current (hydrostatic testing must be preformed every 5 years)


  • HMIS label in place. (HMIS=hazardous materials identification systems) HMIS label are affixed by our service company.
  • Is access blocked or can the extinguisher be easily obtained in an emergency.


  • Initial tag on back, date and state condition of visual inspection.


  • If an extinguisher is defective or missing it must be replacement immediately.


  • Make sure the replacement extinguisher has been serviced within the past year, is tagged, signed, and has a HMIS label.


  • Extinguishersshould be same type (i.e. Water, ABC, Co2. )
