F&CM | EETS | Computer Energy Savings FAQ | Auto Duplexing

Printing on both sides of the paper ("auto duplexing")

First of all, keep in mind that in some cases (for instance, draft printouts), you don't need to use a new piece of paper at all. Consider using paper that already has printing on one side. It's easy to remember for the HP LaserJet printers that are common in F&CM offices: the side you want to print on (the blank side) goes on the bottom in the bottom tray, and on the top in the top single-feed slot. (Note: your printer model might be different.)

When using new paper, you can take advantage of the fact that many of our newer desktop HP LaserJet printers can auto duplex.

Why should I print on both sides of the paper?

Three reasons:

  1. Using half the paper by printing on both sides means buying less paper, and saving money.
  2. It saves trees (and reduces the toxic byproducts that the paper pulp industry puts into the air and water).
  3. If we weren't meant to auto duplex, paper would only have one side!
How about just sticking to those nifty screenshots?

Fine.

When you hit Print and get the "Print" dialog box, click on "Preferences". Choose the "Finishing" tab and make sure the "Print On Both Sides" box is checked.

Enjoy the fun as your printer prints one side and then sucks the page back in to print on the other side.

Is that it?

That's it!

Note - The screen shots might be different for different printer models/drivers. And, you will be able to see the above screen only when your printer support duplex printing.
