Tiopics in Museum Studies: Museums and Indigenous Peoples
Elective. 4 points.
This course examines changing relationships of indigenous peoples to museums
and other display institutions. Placing the representation of indigenous peoples in
imperial, colonial, and national exhibitionary contexts, we will focus on
movements to reclaim Native objects, identity, and rights through efforts at
self-representation. Through a consideration of both independent and cooperative
projects in the U.S., Canada, the Pacific, New Zealand, Australia, India, and
Mexico, we will attend to the possibilities and limits of projects to reorganize
roles, practices, and expectations of display institutions. Topics will include
cultural property, economic development, cultural pluralism, and
self-determination in their connections to museums.
