The 24-point Advanced Certificate in Museum Studies is designed to prepare those who have a strong graduate education in a particular discipline for a museum career. This course of study is intended for those who already have Master’s or Doctoral degrees in the humanities, social sciences, or sciences, or who currently are enrolled or have been admitted into an MA or PhD program at New York University or another highly reputed university in the USA or abroad. Among the fields most often combined with Museum Studies are Biology, Art History, Anthropology, and History. In order to be awarded the Advanced Certificate, students must complete both the Museum Studies Program and their graduate degree requirements. A maximum of eight points in Museum Studies may be applied toward the Master's or Doctoral degree in departments of the Graduate School of Arts and Science and at other schools of the University.
  1. The museum studies certificate requires the successful completion of five core courses (G49.1500, G49.1501, G49.1502, G49.3990, G49.3991) and two electives.
  2. Students eligible for the Advanced Certificate in Museum Studies must successfully complete the Internship G49.3990 with a grade of B or better, and the Research Seminar G49.3991. Attendance at the internship meeting scheduled during the academic year is compulsory for those doing an internship.
  3. Students must arrange appointments for advisement each semester they are in the program, whether or not they are taking courses.
  4. The program must be completed within three years of admission.
